That little video blurb of the guys messing around in a park in Indy the week before the S16 showed Jesse playing soccer.

He did a nifty juggling move - all the more impressive considering he’s a hair shy of seven feet tall.

He needs to get stronger & put on muscle and weight.
And then it’s just reps and practice.

Yeah if you haven't played soccer you wouldn't understand just how much coordination is required. Too many think it's an easy sport. It requires as much if not more work than basketball and starting at a young age. A lack of coordination means you don't play the sport.

It’s hand-eye coordination. grabbing the ball has zero to do with strength. the strength part comes in if you’re going up against another player for a board, not if you just go up and can’t secure it and let it drop through your hands, that’s coordination. more reps in that situation i can agree with, but strength, no, not in the situation i’m talking about.

Rebounding is about reps and being comfortable with the speed of the game and most importantly effort and aggression. You can have great hand eye coordination and suck at rebounding just fine. Jesse had bad form on securing the board. He was waiting for the ball to fall to him then trying to grab it vs going up and getting it. He was too weak and unagressive. At the end of the season he was attacking the boards and not waiting.

Pascal Chukwu had poor hand eye coordination. Jesse catches the ball on offense just fine. His footwork and post moves have looked good since day 1.

His problem at Villanova is he struggles to keep people in front of him. The zone could help him stay on the floor. Appears to shoot the ball well when given some time.
Exactly. Jay Wright’s man to man scheme is hard for many kids to grasp. He might do better in the zone. But is he athletic enough for the back line close-outs? We really wanted him when we were recruiting him. Quinerly flamed out at Nova but has since taken off at Alabama. Some kids are just better fits for certain systems.

He also was uncomfortable in that small ball setup. He has four guys flying around on offense and as a stretch four as opposed to a 5 man he is out of place in their offense. He never looks natural at all even in the games he played well.

From his highlight vids - yes please! wow this team would be deadly from 3...he's also able to score from 2 as well...a huge upgrade from Braswell, imo.

Not sure about defense/rebounding but with that height cant be too bad.

Seems like a smaller Lydon...which would be a great fit!

I personally don't think Q gets draftd this year...so if he comes back...a Q, Benny, Swider, Jimmy forward core would be elite, imo.

get this guy and then another athletic gaurd and center (could very well be AG/Woody and Frank)...and this team is set.

Anyone know what the Villanova board is saying about losing him?

Of course you can just be bad at rebounding and need to completely have your technique refined, but to say there’s no hand/eye coordination in the rebounding aspect of the game, is wrong.

I didn't say there wasn't so my bad if it was implied in how I stated it. My point is Jesse's struggles are not due to coordination.

I disagree, but we’re all rooting for the same thing, hopefully he improves this offseason and we see him reach his full potential.

Meanwhile let's hope Swider pulls the trigger in the next 48 hrs. And we can get into a full court press for Powell.

These have been an awful couple of days after losing Kadary, but your JG3 tuba-lard jokes are crackin me up and keeping me from losing it. Keep em coming!

Joke about the gravy pool at your own peril. If I recall people underestimated Johnny Flynn when he committed as well.

For those who know better than I, between Swider and Benny, can they play side by side at the 3 and 4, or are both of them strong at the same position?

I'm coming around...still think we need some more athleticism/speed but we will definitely have guys that can shoot the rock. Hope Benny is ready to rock and roll the day he steps foot on campus. Quincy coming back would help a lot as well but I'm not sure thats happening.
Agreed. We need a guard or wing that can break guys down off the dribble, get into the lane and dish, finish with either hand or make a pull up ...oh wait, we had that guy but JB just let him walk out the door. Sorry, I may never get over us losing Kadary.

I think this takes us out for Powell, sadly

Swider isn't a 3. He's like a poor man's Lydon -- probably a 4, not as good of a rebounder / shot blocker as Lydon, but a lights out shooter from 3 and a kid with some nifty ability to score inside and drive.

Unlike Lydon, I don't think he can backup the 5. I compared him to Duke's Kyle Singler in a post above -- that's who he reminds me of the most.

Yep and as Lemoynecuse point out rightfully he can be inconsistent and not always aggressive at least in his stint at Nova kind of like Tyler could be for us . Hoping change and better fit plus all that experience gets a better result with us. I think it would.
