SU and UConn set to play at MSG this year

Dave Gavitt Classic at MSG could happen
if you rotated
1 of St. John's, Villanova, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, Marquette
1 of Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Louisville, Boston College, Notre Dame
1 of Rutgers, West Virginia, Penn State, Maryland
1 of Cincinnati, Connecticut, South Florida, Temple

This is a Holiday tournament that could work if they found lower teams to play at the campuses and then the 4 teams played 2 games at MSG.

Given the history of the Big East with Penn State, they would be a hilarious addition to any Dave Gavitt tournament. Paterno accused SU of killing PSU basketball.

But that aside, I wonder what our ACC partners would think of this? Are you guys in or out?

Maybe they would say, "Let's dump SU and Pitt and BC. They never really fit in or made an effort to be really part of the Conference, They are really interested in the old Paterno idea of an Eastern Conference that never existed and will never exist".

At least the Philly "Big 5" has history and geography on its side.

Honestly I doubt the ACC would care about this. This would be a Holiday tournament. With conferences becoming bloated it is hard to find good tournaments every year like the Maui/B4A/Preseason NIT/CvC I think a potential Gavitt Classic would accomplish a chance to play at MSG and with decent teams and not require using nonconference slots on old BE teams in years we would play in this tournament.

Penn State was just a name of an Eastern P6 team that might be interested in playing at MSG.

Your right. I doubt the ACC gives a duke plays in the champions classic every year.

Right. So you would be equally interested in a game vs UCONN as one vs George Washington?

Forget what I am interested in or what you are interested in. It's what is good an smart for the University and the team to do. Beyond the "gate" that is, which I think is the primary reason these games are scheduled.

We shouldn't exclude these teams we USED to be Rivals with nor should we include them. Our schedule should be blind to old association and instead focus in on what we need to develop a team in any one year and how can we leverage the system for picking NCAA teams and seeding them.

One negative effect of these games, IMO, is that they keep a percentage of the fan base in the old world. Time to move on.

I have no nostalgia for these games against teams who used to be rivvals. These games and teams aren't any more important to me than playing Dayton or Creighton might be.

I'd much rather watch SU vs. Maryland than SU vs Georgetown or UConn.

Well, I disagree about the ACC's feelijgs. I think they'd feel it was mildly insulting and it certainly does nothing to put the spotlight on the ACC regular season and tournament.

We are the newcomers. We ought to be concerned about fitting in and not trying to relive the past association.

It's like telling your second wife you want to keep having lunches with your first wife... for old time's sake.

Not me. I couldn't care less about Maryland. You can't pretend that we didn't play in the same league with those other guys for 30+ years. I root against UConn and G-town every game they play. I'm glad we play them in indy because I want to beat them.

The ACC doesn't care who we play in the indy part of our season as long as it doesn't hurt our tournament chances.

I think it's for the good of the university to play compelling games.

No one gives a sh about Maryland or random big five team.

How would playing Maryland fit in with the ACC? You are aware they are in the Big 10?

I don't think Townie realized that if youre afraid of hurting the conference's feelings, playing Maryland is the last thing you do.

Yeah, I agree.

But there a ton of other schools we could play without pandering to the nostalgia urges of part of the fan base. That just delays the departure.

SU is in th ACC. Our new rivals are UNC, Duke, UVA, UL, etc., etc.

Time to adjust thinking.

Well, in DC LOTS of people care about Maryland. Very few care about Georgetown. Just check the attendance records for the home games of the two schools. Maryland sells out. GU plays in a half empty Verizon Center for its big games.

And Philly, is a critical recruiting area for us.

Mildly insulted? Fitting in? Second wives? What the heck are we talking about here?

Townie, I'm guessing you're a big fan of the Real Housewives series.

That would be as far afield from what I am interested as one could possible imagine.

I do suspect that those emotionally attached to our old rivalries might also be soap opera fans. It's the same sort of emotional sugar high, I suspect, and independent from the fact that we are no longer playing for anything meaningful in these games.

Come on, buddy. Just embrace how much fun it will be to stomp UConn at the Garden this coming year. Don't overthink it, it's not your 401K, it's just hoops.

Maybe I can think of it as an NFL exhibition game or the "friendlies" that the top European football clubs play here in the US with lot's of fan interest but little actual impact.

But, alas, no. It's just another OOC game as far as I'm concerned.

I'll save my real interest for games against schools like UVA that count in the standings.

I don't get it. you are just being stubborn at this point. A good game against a good team.

No.

I'm trying to point out that this game is a distraction and not all that important except for those with an emotional need to connect to the Old Big East and the way things used to be. You are aware, I hope, that there are a whole bunch of Su fans that are having some trouble letting go of the past?)

They'll sell a bunch of tickets to it and attendance will be all out of whack for the actual meaningfulness of the game.

Consider this. Next season which of these games is the Least Important for SU:

Vs Duke?
Vs UNC?
Vs UVA?
Vs Louisville?
Vs Any other random ACC Team
vs. Uconn?

The idea is to win the Conference we are actually in and not the Conference we used to be in.

No.

How is it a distraction? Please show your work.

So you are saying that an indy game is less important than a league game. Stop the presses. Wouldn't that also be true if we played Maryland instead?

No.

Beating Uconn this year might have gotten us into the ncaa tournament.

It was playing in a big time early season tournament, like we always do. They just happened to be there as well. Beating A and M helped a great deal too.

Sure did, we needed another solid non conf opponent for next year. Outside of our Big ten opponent our schedule doesn't have many rpi boosting games on it.
