Results? Boeheim lost to these teams for a couple of years. Amazing people forget that part. Never this bad? The team is undefeated and they have played terribly. Just got a top 5 recruiting class (something JB didn’t do ever from my research) in the hardest time to get a player ever with NIL. Just signed a legacy recruit of the biggest legacy the program may have.

And it’s so funny that if they win these games by 10-12 everyone is so happy and jolly and praising Red.

How about getting Donnie Freeman for only 150k in NIL? He had offers that were 3x-4x that and chose to PLAY FOR RED.

I bet all the complainers on here too have never met Red, never talked to him or anything like that. Because if you got the opportunity to, you would realize how great of a person he is and how much he knows about the game and how much he loves Syracuse.

Lastlt, I think the team could go undefeated winning games by 2 points all year and some of you would still complain. And no this isn’t directly aimed at you, it’s aimed at everyone that continues to be such a downer 3 games in to the season and acting like little babies that it’s over. Want the team to get better? Stop complaining and donate…

The DC Stevie Thompson class was definitely in the top 5.

Anyone with a brain knows Autry ain’t going anywhere for another couple seasons at the very very least.

It’ll either work out for Red, or it won’t. He certainly wouldn’t be the first successor of a HoF coach to not work out.

It’s no insult to anyone here, but I’m completely unconvinced by those who are close to the program and say he’s going to be successful. I mean, there were people here assuring us that Greg Robinson was going to have the football program turned around by his third season.

Autry’s a great guy, seems to be recruiting well, and who knows if that’s enough to get the program back to perennial top 25 status.

All I'm going to say is, if it was Jim Boeheim on the sidelines with these results, it would be beyond chaos. We were never this bad and Jim dealt with a lot of criticism, which was all fair, and Red is getting less with a worse product. What we've watched is embarrassing.

Red is only three games into his second year, and he’s getting boatloads of criticism (even though he got decent results out of a dysfunctional team last year). I know you’re reading these threads and see the negativity, because you’re one of the most vocal critics (and I don’t begrudge you that…it’s just unrelenting…which is why you and others are getting some pushback.) With JB, he let the program slide for 8 years, especially in recruiting. And fans gave him a lot of leeway and came to his defense for years and years before the criticism became deafening with the daddy ball year and the stubborn refusal to change anything. Fans know the defense right now is atrocious. Some of us are just trying to preach a little patience.

Fair enough, I don't think it's unreasonable to want to make the tournament by year 3. I just think it takes a lot more turning a group of players (regardless of the talent) into a cohesive team. The portal and NIL don't replace coaching, learning and understanding how to play together and implementing what the coach is doing. That's all I'm saying.

I think the 1997 was top-5 as well. More quantity than quality. And nobody really panned out except Uncle Jason and Dedrick, but still highly ranked.

As a kid, I played all kinds of sports: baseball, basketball, football, golf, and even shot a lot of pool. By my junior year in high school, I had pretty much quit playing team sports—too slow for baseball, didn’t enjoy getting hit in football, and, honestly, I wasn’t very good at basketball. However, I did become a decent golfer. In my mid-20s, up until my daughter was born in my late 30s, I carried a single-digit handicap, which put me ahead of most golfers. Even though I stopped playing team sports, I’ve always enjoyed watching them, especially Syracuse basketball and football.
Now in my early 70s, after decades of watching sports, I’ve come to realize that; I don't know anything about coaching and teams with a mix of good players and one or two great players tend to win a lot of games—even if the coach isn’t the best.
Coach Autry inherited the SU program without many good players and no great players. Winning 20 games last year with that roster was, in my opinion, a testament to pretty good coaching. Last year started much like this one, but the team improved over the season and became respectable by the end.

I doubt Carmelo would want his son playing for a lousy coach. he may know a little more about basketball than most of us on this board, If he didn’t believe Red could make his son a better player and build a championship-caliber team, his son wouldn’t have signed with SU. Next year’s recruiting class is top ten in the nation, so let’s stop bashing the coach.
Every great program has its ups and downs. UCLA, Kentucky, Indiana, and North Carolina have all had stretches of mediocrity, and now it’s Syracuse’s turn. Building a winning team takes time, and it’s not always a smooth process. Coach Autry sat next to one of the top five college coaches for years. He’s passionate about SU, he’s a good man, and will be successful.

Chill out and enjoy the journey.

That’s sweet and all, but this is a sports forum. If we aren’t entitled to and supposed to discuss what we see, I’m not sure what the purpose is. Also not sure what or who defines what “bashing” is. I thought that word was reserved for fanboys of certain types of products… like ten+ years ago.

To very many people, we don’t have an acceptable product. Scrutiny of the architect of that product seems valid, when it is accompanied by reason, support, and facts. We may disagree on perspective and what facts or stats are valid or applicable, and that’s where discussion and argument come into play. And I thought that’s why we are here. It would be completely Uninteresting and Un informative and Unconstructive to me if everyone felt the same way about every aspect, and every comment was positive and optimistic, ignoring rationality.

The advice to chill out and enjoy the journey is kinda offensive, actually. Chill out, meaning just accept what’s being fed us? Enjoy a mediocre product? Our fans spend a lot of time and money on this product and have decades of emotional investment and attachment. If I bought a Thingamajig on Amazon for $14.99 and I wasn’t satisfied with it, I’d return it and possibly write a review. I’d suggest that SU basketball is exponentially more important to us than that, yet we’re supposed to just sit back and smile? In one sense, I admire your ability to do that. In another sense, No, I don’t want to be that person. Doesn’t make sense to me to be happy or content with ‘average.’

The bit about Carmelo knowing more about basketball… etc. and how his son choosing SU is an endorsement…. That’s just the logic of sentiment. I wouod suggest that if the options were SU, USC, and Auburn, there were a good number of factors that won the day for us, and Red’s (assumed) acumen vs that of the other coaches (who even are they?) is largely not yet understood. And sitting next to JB for so long, including during the ‘prolonged downturn’ is not quite the Pro bullet point that you’re portraying.

One thing to consider or remember: no matter what some of us wanted in terms of a search for a JB replacement, I’d bet we all really like Red, and want him to succeed. But, we’re allowed to be frustrated by what we are seeing and what we aren’t seeing.

Greg Robinson, may he rest in peace, probably never set foot within hours of Syracuse, like his boss, before he got the job. Didn't know a high school coach within hours of the place, or the culture, etc. He was never going to get the players with that background and our crappy at the time facilities.

That's about 180 degrees off from Red (or for that matter had the job gone to Gerry) is and now where SU is in the hoops facility chase.

No players no chance. Players he has a chance, so we will see.

Like everyone on this board I am really disappointed in this season. But I really have a tough time understanding how this board has become nothing but a place to complain about JB and JW. Since JW has been there SU has turned a tired looking facility into one of the best college stadium's in...

You made this same post 3 years ago and were incorrect. With all due respect, you were wrong then and it's possible you are wrong now when you say "he will be successful". We all hope he will be, there is no guarantees at all.

Wow, how and why would you do research on something I posted 3 years ago, although with the amount of posting I do I’m sure it was easy. The reality is, in the post 3 years ago I supported a guy who built the program, brought tons of excitement to SU, won over a1,000 games when people outside of Syracuse they think JB. With Red, has a great recruiting class, changing the culture, new players shifting year to year requires learning how to play together, it takes time.
By the way, I don’t know JB or Red, I look at more than what is happening on the court, it takes a lot of sweat equity to succeed. With Red and Coach Brown Cuse has coaches that understand the current landscape of college sports, believe SU is a great product and will succeed.

Landing Sadiq and Kyian saves his job, but I’m really questioning his ability to evaluate talent. No offense to the players, but our team feels like an island of misfit toys—a collection of oddly shaped, limited role players who, athletically, can’t keep up with P5 athletes and don't seem to have the discipline or coaching needed to compensate for those deficiencies. This season is going to be a real struggle.

I'd like to see some sort of concept on defense regardless of talent, yes.

I'll give you an example. Earlier this season, the Special Teams on football was a complete dumpster fire. We were told by some on the board, we don't have the talent, etc. Fran took accountability said he was going to fix it and slowly, as of the last couple weeks, the special teams has been, at worst, good...and imo you could even say stellar.

I don’t see the parallel. Specials in football were terrible in the early games when we could not get a punt off and had a FG attempt blocked and our original FG kicker missed others. These are egregious failings - 98% of teams get these right with talent no different than what we have. So good for Fran and the ST coach for fixing things by changing personnel and working at it. .

Our hoops defense is bad because the experienced guards can’t keep guys out of the lane and Lampkin is heavy footed and not a rim protector. We do appear to be decent at defensive rebounding - Lampkin can block out, Freeman used his height and elevation to clear a lot of boards against Youngstown. That component of defense is better than last season because we have better size. Freeman will learn and be a better M2M defender. I expect our guys will get back in transition and stop the ball better - that is basic effort and must be done. But I don’t know what “sort of concept on defense” or coaching adjustments will turn the other guys in the rotation into above average defenders either individually or as a unit. Maybe some of the posters can send Red some ideas?

There are ways to hide defenders and change defensive concepts. Red knows more about basketball than most posters. I’d hope he’s looking into these instead of your solution of “WELP WE CANT DEFEND…what are you gonna do???” He built the roster.

I think Coach Autry is doing good with what he has to work with. Does he need the team to play with passion and fire? Absolutely. I don’t know what Red has seen in practice to give the keys to Carlos at pg but it’s not looking too good. He’s undersized and i think lacking confidence so far at this level. There’s better options on the bench that would give us a better chance to win and not have to play catch up ball every game. So I’ll say this again what has Coach seen in practice to make him the starter because im definitely not seeing it?

I loved Red as a player. Saw him live many times, ate dinner with him and Otis Hill at Kimmel (even during Joe Carters walk-off home run), and his 30-10-6 game vs Kentucky in 1994 was why we won.

But as a coach, he’s still got a ways to go.
