UConn hoops back to Big East

Found it...Suite revenue from the Yum center...

Louisville hoops revenue

However, note that it dwarfed Louisville football when Louisville was in the Big East but Football has now drawn even...
The revenue potential of suites is huge.

It will be interesting if at some point in the renovation process, more suites are added to the Carrier Dome. They have to considering it.

I would think the most tempting options would be to

1) cannibalize the 200 level seats for football and basketball, in event extending suites around the entire perimeter of the dome. The ones on the east side would not be usable for basketball and wouldn't get top dollar. The ones on the west side would be fantastic for basketball and good for football. They would command a lot of money.

or

2) add suites on the west end of the dome above the existing third level seats, that would look out on the field/court from where the big scoreboard is today. When the center hung new 4 sided scoreboard is added, that scoreboard on the west wall of the Dome really isn't needed any longer. They could make a lot more money building suites up there.

The seats would be closer to the action and more valuable if they opt to get rid of the 200 level sections, but it would disrupt a lot of long time loyal season ticket holders and finding replacement seats for them would probably cause many season ticket holders on the 300 level to be affected. I think there is already going to be a lot of angst and issues with long time season ticket holders getting moved if we go to individual seats instead of benches, which if reports are true, will make about 10% of the seats sold in the Dome disappear. This would make a bad situation much much worse.

Adding suites above the 300 level on the west end of the dome would be a lot less disruptive and I think the seats would still be of high quality. In some ways, they might be more desirable, in that you might be able to take an elevator up to what would be a fourth level very easily, there might be less competition for bathroom access, maybe concessions too.

If SU wants to get a big bump in revenue, this would be one of the best ways to do it.

Agreed. New stadiums and arenas are all about premium seating...

With the configuration of the dome, the 200s would be the best place for a combination of suites and club seating...

And it's all because the NFL guessed wrong. An official of the league (it may have been another owner) later admitted that they only let the Cowboys keep the suite money because the owners were convinced the suites wouldn't sell and the NFL would then be obligated to give them some sort of subsidy that exists in the by-laws. Sports Illustrated said the ideal stadium to the NFL is one that has about 65,000 seats and every one of them is considered and configured as a suite. The drawing they had of the concept was a weatherproof cocoon surrounding the seat.

It looks like UConn has found its final resting place.

an enormous backbreaking number that cant be legally enforced. liquidated damages clauses cannot be punitive. it has to be a reasonable estimation of the potential damage for the breach.

I think we will have an extra one they can have for a good price next summer...

That was an actual "laugh out loud" when I read that!
Well played.

The contract between the Big East and UConn prohibits UConn from talking to the P5 before they enter the Big East officially, and explicitly prohibits talking to the P5 about their football program. They are permitted to talk to the G5 about football program only. This is section 1b. After they enter the Big East, there is a $30 million exit fee. The interesting thing is that the exit fee goes down over time, once after 6 years, and again after 10 years.

Well damn right the Big East should ask UConn for these kinds of guarantees. UConn clearly feels their hoops program slipping away. They consider football to be "already gone".

As a fan, or a taxpayer, I would be really upset at their apparent and obvious surrender. The dream of a P5 or P4 future is gone.

(And it could have been us - we got snubbed once, too, for political reasons, but we never sued our league, like UConn did...)

The Big East put them in handcuffs. I mean, there is absolutely no hope for their FB program. Not only are they one of only a handful of independents, they are now the absolute least attractive to P5 conferences because of the Big East terms.

After 2-3 years of getting pummeled, they will go back to FCS.

They certainly got screwed over by realignment, but they have also screwed the pooch at every opportunity.

I am not lawyer but looking at the document, it appears to me that UConn signed off all Tier 3 rights to all sports except football to the Big East as well.

But there is a clause that could allow UConn to sell their basketball Tier 3 rights, presumably to SNY.

The Conference will exclusively represent each of the Members with respect to the sale, licensing, distribution and other exploitation of the Media Rights and all matters related thereto, except, in each case, to the extent that the rules of the Conference expressly permit the Member to retain for itself or to the extent the Board votes to return other rights to the Members or to grant any other person or entity a license to exploit certain specified Media Rights; (emphasis mine)

So while they didn’t give them explicit permission to work with SNY on this, there is language in the contract that could permit it. I assume that paragraph was added specifically to allow UConn to sell their Tier 3 basketball content to SNY.

Any lawyer able to confirm this?

Swofford should leave a message and say he’d like to discuss a few things just to mess with them.

Also, they have to pay $3.5M just to get in the door. That's a helluva cover charge...

Yeah, I don't think you have to worry about Syracuse giving Danny Hurley $8M.

I don't think you have to worry about Syracuse giving Danny Hurley $2.

I still remember the chant when Danny was playing for Seton Hall. “Bobby’s better” ...”Bobby’s better”.....
