Virginia Gameday...

Mullen maybe getting a rep with the officials for some reason, gets called early way to much often when nothing is discernable from watching live or on TV. Johnny did what he had to do late, won those last few and that last one was just enormous
Same thing seemed to happen to him in another game earlier this season maybe Harvard? Not sure but it seemed like in both that game and this one that the refs were doing something to throw him off.

Don't think it was Harvard but your right it absolutely happened another Game, maybe Towson? He fought through it but definitely something to keep an eye on. Bigger concern is the lack of depth. Drew Angelo has not looked good the last few games. Need him to be better. Cuse may need to hit the portal for a backup Fogo we don't have one in this coming class.

Millon with a big day in the stat book, but like last year, he really can kill them with the turnovers and impatient shots. Some of his shots were weak angle early in the shot clock that got it quickly going back the other way for us. They obviously need him on O, but he hurts them a lot by not valuing the ball. Thought we created offense for them by sliding to him even if he had not gotten a real step on figueras

Good point on Millon. He reminds me of Dordevic in Gaits 1st year. Has to take a lot of shots some of which is due to the fact that he doesn't have a ton of help around him. Again not defending Millon completely but he's the only real dodging threat save for Colsey (somewhat) and the UVA midfield has been a disaster. Shutz has completely regressed, Hackett has like 5 pts the entire year and Balsamo has been worse. There missing a number of guys to injury of course but they shouldn't be this lost offensively

Mullen stats by game - it certainly wasn't Harvard. ;)

final possession of the game he threw it away on a lazy one handed pass. No bueno

Doesn't appear Deere was hurt but one thing I think is clear Anderson showed why he should be at attack this game. As long as Thomson is out he should be at attack. Once Thomson is back he should definitely be on the 2nd mid line

Gait has gotta go man, zero energy and can’t inspire guys to be better than they already are.. offense holding up in every clear even with space in front of them. McCool continues to struggle low… my goodness
Terrible leader for these boys! Win or lose we should be able to develop these kids on and off the field! Has created a horrible culture, these kids have to take over for us to win a championship. We’re gonna win this one!

Now there’s a pair of insane takes.

Good lord

Absolutely! Anderson was fantastic! He finally got an opportunity. He’s such an exciting player, and we finally have an attackman who can dodge and draw a slide. We haven’t had one for years! I understand this sounds crazy, but I would play Anderson, Hiltz, and Thomson (when he comes back) on attack and Leo, English, and Hottle at middie. Hottle is a stud, and, like Andersen, the only thing stopping him is the lack of playing time. Spallina can have all of the points he can get against weaker teams, but he cannot dodge against a good defender and his shot is average, at best. He was not even an All ACC attackman last year (and they pick 6 attackman!), and he probably won’t be one this year, either

I think your selling Spallina short. Yes he's struggled against elite poles but keep in mind he is drawing each teams best defender which is freeing up our other attackmen especially whoever is drawing that 3rd pole. Spallina playing with a truly great dodging threat I think would open up his game which is why I've been begging to get Anderson extended run.

I do think that when Thomson comes back he and Anderson should split time between attack and the 2nd midline. Anderson is to good not to play

Here’s a stat - through the 9 games before this one, we are #1 in the ENTIRE NATION in turnovers per game! We average 12.8 and the second best averages 13.5, so after todays game with 8, we are likely to be more than an entire turnover ahead of the next best team in the country. We are also 3rd in clearing percentage!! First quarter was rough no doubt about it, but an incredible 1 turnover and one failed clear in the entire second half. That was the difference today. Does Gait get credit for the turnaround, or only blame for the bad start?

For those of interest.

Nasty Nester gave up 4 HR's in the 1st to:

Goldy
Belli
Judge
Wells
3 HRs on the first 3 pitches the Yankees saw!!!
9 HRs total. Aaron Judge 3 HRs, including a grand salami. Yankees won 20-9.

Staff has done a much better job against the 10 man this year. Struggled a bit last week but only 8 today is very impressive

Brutal last few weeks for Hop
I think part of it is that Michigan and Rutgers are getting better and Hopkins may have been overrated but Melendez being out has really hurt them. Ohio State didn't dominate Rutgers today and Michigan looks they're better than everyone thought. There seems to be less separation among teams this year - Big10, ACC the two best with Ivy close but Yale, Brown, Penn weak links. Dartmouth is finally out of the wilderness. Duke and UVA have definitely taken a step back and I'm loving it. They were so tough to play in 2019-21 when we had some pieces.

Based on what I've seen so far, Cuse has a legit sniff at the final four. Cornell and Notre Dame will really be true benchmarks for where we stand over the next 2 weeks.

We started Payton today because we thought he could handle a pole and dodge and make some plays. In the past these guys have traditionally shorted one of our attack players and kind of taken us a little bit out of our offense so the idea was to put Payton in there so if they wanted to short him he was going to Green Light to the net all day.
