Who’s it gonna be guys and gals?

I'll say GS off the bat. You don't bring him in unless you have serious concerns about TD and Dino knows he's on the clock. Ohio will be a tricky opponent as well. I don't think we're in a position where we can concede a drive or two before brining in the new guy.

Total guess. Just want to win. If TD comes through, great. If it's GS, great. Just put wins on the board.

Personally, I prefer a dual threat QB rather than a pocket passer, but what do I know.

You can't start the transfer when an incumbent has been here this long.

You have to make Tommy lose the job. Or win it, and show us what he's got.

Yeah you can. We won 1 game last year. Whoever Dino/Gilbert thinks gives us the best chance to win will start against Ohio. There's no time to mess around or worry about feelings being hurt.

If we were opening against Albany, that might be different.

I think thats what he's saying though. If Tommy lose the job after a tough competition then Shrader does give us the best chance to win. Keep in mind the staff knows what TD will do in a game in our offense. They dont know how Shrader will do with a new scheme with new team mates. You probably should going into a winnable game with the safer decision. Tommy has beated similar teams in the past (W Michigan). IMO, Shrader will have to be really good with the offense to get the start.

Shader's learning curve imo is the wildcard, I agree there.

Probably right but I do not think it’s a guarantee. There is a reason TD as a four year player and returning qb starter is not going to media days.
The staff is going to play the player it feels has the best chance to win games. Unless TD has a metamorphosis the staff knows his strengths and weaknesses. They also know the strength and weaknesses of the other position groups. They will play the player that best fits with the current pieces.
I’m interested in seeing if he gets beat out does TD stay for the rest of the season or leaves the team immediately and enter the transfer portal.

Probably has a decent learning curve. Been on campus since January. Should have a pretty decent understanding of Gilbert’s offense and knew what he needed to personally work on after spring.

I think the system he played in at Miss St prior to Leach taking over was similar to Dino's. But after the last few years I'm not taking anything for granted lol.

For me Its less about the learning curve. Its about knowing what you are going to get out of TD in a game like this. Just because we prefer Shrader it doesnt mean its best to start him game one. Plus we cant assume TD hasnt improved on some of his flaws.

I don't have a dog in this debate yet, but there are some reads that happen pre-snap and then again immediately at the snap (finding the hot receiver if the D is blitzing for example).
They didn't have to blitz. That is sort of the point.

I read it has him saying let Tommy win or lose the job on the field game 1. But maybe I read it wrong.

It's about managing the locker room. We brought in that kid from Oklahoma to QB us years ago, and he failed to win the job.

Tommy will clearly start game 1. He may not finish it, but I guarantee that he will start it.

Not including Tommy on media duty is to shield him from having to face questions about whether he's afraid of losing his starter's status after every bad game.

This staff has been very conservative about playing new players on offense. For such a simple offense, I guess they feel that learning the live reads takes players time before they are trusted.

If Shrader beats out DeVito before Game One's kickoff, then he will have to be head-and-shoulders better in camp.

That's just what I meant. I don't think anybody wins it outright in camp. I think Tommy is the Game One starter, and how long he remains the starter is going to get decided pretty quickly. He has to win all 4 of those OOC games. I'll be surprised if that happens.

All his best throws are dropped? Taj has dropped a couple verticals balls but from the last few years Devito's best throws were caught. Overall the Wr group is soild and will benefit from consistent line play and a functionable offense.
I think the entire offense with the exception of the RBs have a lot to prove this season. OL, QB, WRs, TEs…. It’s all got to get better.

Good point. It’s a simple offense. The way they call plays and determine when they run them is complicated.

Yeah I’m not saying they are all acc level. They all have things to prove. I’m just saying they ain’t scrubs. Not FCS level. They will look a lot better with a efficient offense.

It wasn't the point of the post I was responding to. But I agree, teams did not have to blitz to get home, although many did.

Our Wr’s made scrabble plays down the field in previous years in the system. There’s a disconnect with TD. You can put some of blame on the wr’s but its really on the QB. It’s his job to be on the same page. They have to believe he can get the ball to them in those situations. Im sure they think he’s going to tuck and run like he normally do. Doesn’t keep his eyes down field. It’s natural for any wr to try it get open. You learn that in little league.

Money, I agree Devito is not great in these situations but those receivers that were good at improvising are no longer here.

Watch the receivers a bit closer if you look at old games (like I do) and you see Taj do nothing but pout if the play doesn’t go perfect, NJ is much better Q seems to be indifferent when the play breaks down (I’ll blame youth for him). We have one of the worst receiver groups since the Tim Lane and Rice Moss days (that’s Dino’s fault I know).

But these receivers are the least hungry bunch I have seen in a long time and is a reason why I said it might not have been such a bad thing to lose Lustig from a WR point of view (though ST will likely suffer)

So during the summer months are the QBs doing playbook reviews or watching tape at the coaches house? How much interaction is permitted or are there no limitations? So for example can Lamson, Jorts, TD and Jacoby spend an evening at Gilbert's house watching tape or playbook?

The wr’s might not be as good but the QB has to throw the ball. Lol. TD doesn’t attempt to give his guys a shot to make a play. They all know that. How can they find ways to get open when the QB doesn’t look down field? He won’t throw on the run.

No they are limited in summer organized gatherings. Players can do workouts on their own. Coaches can’t be a part of it. I’m assuming it’s the same with in person film review. They might be able to zoom as much possible.
