Whos our next head coach

A little off the radar but Middle Tennessee State’s defensive coordinator really impressed me when they got us in the dome a couple years back. Name escapes me but wouldn’t hate to give him a look.

Doug Marrone would be my top choice, Bill Obrien would be another but why would he come to Cuse? Charlie Strong would be interesting, Hugh Freeze, Jamie Chadwell but he will get a much bigger job eventually.

They lost to Virginia Tech by 3TDs this past week.
I am sure he would have some interesting commentaries on Afghanistan though.

Yes, clueless. SU is not hiring Saban.
Of course they arent. I was just giving an extreme example to rebut your statement.

Moving on tho, I don't want to argue with a fellow boston guy...

So we get a dynamic coach, great recruiter, assembles a great staff of people who have not quite made it. Those people are looking for opportunities to prove themselves. Wired that we’ve never tried that before. They come into a pretty bare cupboard. This assumes defections and the fact that recruiting has obviously been sub par. So highly recruited player will come in naked. Naked in the sense that they will have low expectations of immediate success. They come in naked in the sense that absent an unprecedented flood of 4 and 5 stars, they will be surrounded by lesser players. It’s very hard to shine without talent around you. The best case scenario would be a talented group of inexperienced players. Hard to draw into that I would think. The years taken to achieve a foundation erode confidence in the fan base and further challenges to recruiting. Maybe that’s why “made” coaches don’t come into situations like this. How many would be barking to tree the next head coach as the trials and tribulations of growth go on? Just some thoughts.

If Moorhead gets the SU job in 2022 we know who his starting QB will be.

“Former Mississippi State coach and current Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead recruited Shrader to Starkville out of Charlotte Christian School in North Carolina to be the future of the MSU program.“

I prefer to think profile first:

- HC experience
- Understands NE football/ACC football
- Bold, thinks outside of the box on offense
- Makes good hires, especially DC
- Good recruiter/developer of talent
- up and comer, no retread

give me 5 of those 6

If only Donovan McNabb could have convinced Michael Vick on his recruiting visit tour that SU was the school, to have Vick say on the phone to his mother, "I'm going stay here and play for SYRACUSE", this thread wouldn't exist.

Word is he did tell her that… it just wasn’t what she said lol.

A few must.

Has to have strong East Coast roots.
Has to be from the East Coast
Has to have Coached an East Coast team
Has to have been born raised Married or Gone to College in the East.
Has to have some Italian Irish German or Polish blood in their Veins
Has to be able to navigate NYC without help
Has to love Snow.
Coach Mac. God bless him.

Probably would have been better for Michael getting away from his home boys.

Dino Babers. He turns to GS and they end up 5-7, or 6-6...

I wouldn’t pay somebody top 15 money off the bat here.
Unless it’s a coach who has earned it.

We just need to find a good coach build the program up.
Use us to get a better job and hire somebody to keep the momentum.

Dino’s 2019 told us what he was.
He developed the roster that he inherited and then when it was his guys turn we flipped.
THANK YOU!! With the schedule we play we don't need a top 15 coach to consistently go bowling which is pretty much everyones goal. We will probably always recruit in the 50's we need a coach who can develop players, we'll never beat the top programs but our ACC pier schools with a small recruiting advantage should be possible. The notion that syracuse can't make consistent bowl games especially given the schedule we play is just ludicrous to me.

Morehead checks a lot of boxes but look who his run game coordinator was.

Mississippi State 2019 staff:

  • Tony Hughes, Associate Head Coach/Tight Ends (eighth year)
  • Terry Richardson, Assistant Head Coach/Run Game Coordinator/Running Backs (first year)
  • Deke Adams, Defensive Line (first year)
  • Andrew Breiner, Pass Game Coordinator/Quarterbacks (second year)
  • Terrell Buckley, Cornerbacks (fourth year)
  • Marcus Johnson, Offensive Line (second year)
  • Michael Johnson, Wide Receivers (first year)
  • Joey Jones, Special Teams Coordinator (second year)
  • Tem Lukabu, Linebackers (second year)
  • Bob Shoop, Defensive Coordinator/Safeties (second year)

Joe presented at a couple of clinics I went to over the years. Loved listening to him as the offense he ran was similar to ours.
Honest question what offense do we run?

There are traditional concepts in most of what we run.

We run both zone and gap schemes on the ground. Quick game and RPO have a lot of the same concepts anywhere you go.

Im honestly not sure with the intermediary and deep routes this year as I haven’t seen live and the tv angles don’t support wide field views.

Pretty much everyone runs the same route trees and concepts at some level. The art is in the setup and execution. Knowing what concepts have higher percentage success rates against what the defense is giving you is preparation. If you’re prepared and can disguise through formation and motion, that’s where you execute better and have explosive plays and consistency.

We had multiple guys running free deep that we missed on Saturday (at least 5 by my count). Good football teams don’t miss those. They certainly don’t miss 5. And both QB’s were guilty. I’m not as harsh on GS, bc it was the first time he’s really gone live this year.

If we’re going to depend on the deep shot consistently, you have to hit them. Unless you like punting.

This is what I hate about the Gilbert offense. It's such a low percentage play. I don't think we do ourselves any favors here.

If and when a change happens, speaking with Marrone would be one possibility as long as our D remains in tact; they are the part that’s working.
Hate to be that guy but our defense has feasted on Ohio and Rutty. Might be premature to say that’s “working”.

5-7 should get him canned to.

Whoever we hire needs to be a proven recruiter at the power 5 level (with East coast ties) or be Doug Marrone.

Simple as that.

I think 5-7 gets him another year, especially if he goes with Schrader. As long as we don't see a bunch of transfers, then they should be returning a ton starters next year.
