Wildhack Presser 10 AM Monday

just mentioned delays in getting calls from the box to the field. said it was inefficient and needs to be better.

Tomcat also mentioned it today. It was a huge issue all season and led to a bunch of screwups. burned timeouts, delay of games, the 2 pt conversion etc.

That's what kills me. We're messing up the stuff that we *can* compete with the big boys on. That just cannot happen.

We have to have a tight operation during gameday to give us a real chance each week.

It’s corporate speak. Plain and simple.
The guy is a politician. Good at it but anyone who wants to can see right thru it.

Low energy, calm, and just spin.
John removes emotion from his decision making, he's done that for years and its a good quality for a leader to have. I don't think this is nearly as complicated as people want to make it. JW thinks there's more upside to giving Dino one more year than in firing him and bringing in a new HC. People may disagree, and that's fine, but that's his calculus.

Think a majority of us here understand that there is going to be a press conference on the Monday after Thanksgiving next year as well and all that will happened in the time between now and then is a year will have passed that could have been the roster turnover and system implementation year for the inevitable new coach. Instead we have to go through this lame duck year in 2022 and then that mess year in 2023. Great.

I couldn’t load the live stream, but if the summaries on here are accurate it sounds like Dino truly is on a hot seat now. The negative recruiting will be very real. Hope we do well in the portal.

I’ll be at the Dome either way. Hope we pull off the upset of a lifetime and upset ND on national television.

Yeah, I mean, here's the other thing - if football gets even worse, it's not just Dino that's under the microscope, it isn't good for JW's job either.

Not saying he would be canned, but if he has to fire Dino and the football team is in the dumpster, JW isn't exactly in a great position.

If the football program gets better, so does life for JW.

Clearly JW didn’t like Gilbert

Wants Dino to literally pound the portal

Wants Dino to have a Special teams coach

Tony White will be the next head coach for Syracuse

JW doesn’t want any of the assistants besides White and Schmidt

That’s what I took from this

this obviously falls on Dino but what exactly can you do about it in the middle of the season. Mcfukit used to freeze up in the box to. Maybe he shouldve whacked Gilbert after the Wake game. But if you straighten that out with a professional OC then it can change a lot of the in game dynamics.

Just got done with my meeting. All I see is a black screen.
Is it over or is my connection not working?

It's not a crazy desire though. In the past 20 years Pitt has made 15 bowls (including this year), had 3 losing, non-bowl seasons, and been ranked at some point in the season 12 times. Yeah, they haven't had a pinnacle season (this year could be it) but they've been consistently OK, and won 8+ games ten times.

The SU comparison is awful and depressing: 5 bowls, 14 losing non-bowl seasons, ranked twice, three seasons of 8+ wins.

2 ACC Championship Games for Pitt as well, and I bet they win it this year.

I can't even fathom Syracuse winning an ACC championship.

Yep. I always compare SU to a small market MLB franchise. It's not that they can't compete, its that they have a razor thin margin of error. So the operation has to be incredibly buttoned up, from player evaluation, to development, to in-game strategy. We've failed bigly in those three areas for most of the past 20 years.

*edit* I'll add, I wish I could articulate what Dino's approach is in those three areas, but I have no idea. Back in the mid-2000s, when Celtics ownership changed hands (decidedly not small market, but not a popular FA destination), the new crew did extensive research into the traits of championship teams. What they found led them to retaining Paul Pierce, trading for Ray Allen, signing Kevin Garnett, and building their supporting cast. They ended up winning a title, playing for another, and having a very successful 6 year run. It was a methodical approach. I can't say that I've ever seen that from SU -- it always seems scattered and reactionary.

Only quibble - due to COVID keeping last years coaching churn low, this season is particularly high. Waiting (though I'm not sure is the right football decision for 2022) might work in our favor in better candidates in 2023.

As much as some of you want to complain about the presser, that was an excellent presser. He was open, honest and touched upon every tough question from Dino to assistants, to recruiting, to on the field efficiencies, to player development, areas for improvement, money, etc. And no, he wasn’t blowing smoke nor side stepping tough questions.

We're in the wrong division for that, IMO. Clemson will have this thing on lock down next year. We need to go to PODS asap.

What did he say [for those who can't watch while at work]?

I'm not sure which ones the poster was alluding to that you quoted, but here's my take:

1) Recruiting for this year is not over. Need to hit finish strong, inclusive of using the portal.
2) Need support, both financially and otherwise, from alumni (specifically the guys that came through the program before).
3) Need to right the ship and get to a "13th game" next year regardless of schedule.
4) Special teams needs to be fixed / gameday needs to be tight.
5) Tony White and Schmidt applauded. Tony White has a lot of potential.

Overall, I think he has faith in Dino and sees potential with a few more pieces in the team to get to a bowl game. I think he is very clear that the stuff we can compete with the blue bloods on (specials, gameday ops, etc) has to be fixed without question.

What did he say [for those who can't watch while at work]?

paraphrasing (I'll have to go back and relisten) but he's looking for donations (from former players) to expand the recruiting office and hire more people to help out in that regard. Talked about us being a developmental program and also favors using the portal to help.

I really liked that press conf. Don't hate the man just because you hate his decision. That's foolish but i guess that's what we do as fans.

I think he just took a real uncalculated gamble that no other college is doing. Give a guy more time who has given us no real reason (W/L) to merit it. Syracuse does beat to its own drum so let's see if it pays off

I still like JW regardless of whether or not I like his decision. He was direct in his responses and his thought process.

The one thing that rang hollow to me - money/buyout didn’t matter in our decision making… and, we need your money donors! In the same breath, almost literally.

This is the course, not gonna be bitter about it. Lots of interesting items to follow until Spring (portal/coaching hires/recruiting).

But we had an ACC leading rushing game. Apparently this is a reason to retain the head coach but fire the OC. I guess Dino was in charge of the running plays and Sterlin was in charge of the passing plays.
