2022 NFL Thread

The open promotion of gambling by sports leagues is making me care less about sports.

And the “fans” who only care about the games that they’re gambling on, which is basically everybody, annoy the hell out of me.

I’m going to learn how to paint or something.

I look at the NFL and college football as entertainment.

$ and the preachy way the NFL brass/owners fake concern over players and life issues is actually quite creepy once you take your fan hat off and see it for what it really is.

The NFL needs to pare back their rule book and let people play. The litany of rules makes it impossible for the stripes not to impact the games, and with the gambling aspect basically running the league...needs to be figured out.
What rules do you think they need to get rid of?

Removing established rules is only going to pour gasoline on a bonfire.
If they want to create a process that is viewed as fair, either get better at officiating or use replays more.
Fans get to see replays and can easily see where officials miss calls. If you don't give officials more chances to correct bad calls, they're going to continue to look like a bunch of morons.

Eagle fans have been hearing all year long that their team hasn't beaten anybody. Damn, we're running out of teams to beat. ;)

The naysayers/detractors have glossed over the fact that Philly's OL and DL is superior to the rest of the league. KC, CINCI, BUFFALO all of them would get whupped in the trenches by the Birds. Admittedly those three teams have a better QB than Hurts but that differential doesn't make up for the disparity at the line of scrimmage. Shout out to my boy Cusefan0307 as he figured this out half way through the season.

I said it a long time ago too. They're really good and well built. And they've had the softest path in history with their best win still @Detroit. Both can be true.

At least you acknowledge that they're really good. A lot of other folks can't admit that part and moan about the schedule. All they can do is beat whomever is in front of them. They're 16-1 with Hurts in the lineup.

This broadcast crew is so awful. “It looks promising” for purdy to come back .. with his arm essentially in a soft cast
Twitter loves Olsen.
How do they not check the ball on the Smith 4th down catch before going to commercial? "Oh ya he's definitely in bounds". Thanks Greg.

Is anybody really complaining that it wasn't a valid penalty?
Or is this guy just trying to get Twitterattention?
Twitter is full of people saying things like “the game shouldn’t have been decided on a call like this”

He needed to be better. His coach did him no favors by not running the ball on 2nd as well as 3rd and 3. Got too cute and are going home.
This is 1990 am Radio caller stuff.
I'm sure the soon to be $300m QB doesn't have the authority to check to a run if he wants.

Game should have went to OT. They held 3 Bengals linemen on that play. Not sure why Ron Torbert keeps getting big games because it certainly feels like his crew blows a lot of calls in big games(I know it's an all star officiating crew).
I'd love to know the criteria for how the NFL determines which officials are "All Star" Side Judges, Field Judges, Umpires, etc.

Because the dumbest thing to me is to take people who've spent roughly 20 weeks working together to officiate games, break them up and re-assign them to other crews.

The rules around PI/defensive holding are next to impossible to adjudicate consistently at the speed of the NFL.

The rule I would change (and most people disagree) is get rid of the "ground can't cause a fumble." Make it more like Rugby in that the team that ends up with the ball at the end of the play gets possession.

This eliminates all the stupidity of "was the knee down," "did any part of the ball cross the goal line," "did he make a football move," etc.

The game would be infinitely more interesting if possession changed more often and at different places on the field.

I agree. I think the all star crews are stupid. Just take the best officiating crews from the regular season that are used to working together.

Unlike sports forums such as this.
Ron Burgundy What GIF

Agreed on the officiating crews. That is really stupid to break up those groups. As an aside, there was one point where Zac Taylor was jawing with an official y'day that looked every bit of 60. The NFL needs to get much younger officials.

I've always claimed that the rules committee gets together in the offseason to hold coke fueled meetings as they come up with some of the dumbest rules of any big time sport.

How is it legal to push a player from behind on these QB sneaks? Yeah player safety. The keep the clock running because the ball carrier's momentum was stopped (think Dalton Shultz) is a stoopid rule. It's a judgment call. If you're OB you're OB. That's how it always was.

You fumble the ball out of the end zone and it's the other team's ball on the 20 - whaa? Insane. Gunners come down and whiz by the PR within inches of him and no penalty? That's just a train wreck waiting to happen. Yeah player safety.

I'm sure if I thought for a while I could come up with a few more.

Or get full time crews which is what Pat McAfee suggested. When you have part timers you're prone to the All Star system.

I guess what I will never understand is just because the refs miss a call earlier in the game which happens all the time in every sport doesn't mean they should or will ignore a pretty basic call later in the game. Doesn't make the missed call right but certainly they aren't going to ignore future penalties later in the game. It happens.

Miss one late hit or hold so you should ignore the next one?

I saw that Zac Taylor/sideline official heated exchange.

I think it was right before the make up call overturning the KC first down without forcing Cincy to use a challenge.

Methinks that was a make up for giving KC a do-over on their previous 3rd down.

Absolute clown show.
