AP / Coaches Poll for Oct 6

Michigan and Southern Cal have good reputation. Our football program is terrible in the past 15 or 20 years.

How the hell does 3-2 Arizona, who has looked awful, have 11 votes?? More than 5-1 Texas Tech, who beat them in Tucson last night? Not to mention UNLV with 11 vs our 1, Stanford loss or not that is dumb
Coaches probably voted before they went to bed. I think it was like half time at midnight here. But agree, most coaches don’t seem to put much thought into it at all

Agreed llandz - we just beat them and they get 11 to our 1????? Something just ain't right there.
Well, they received less votes than before the game and we received more (even if it is just one). Vandy got more votes and Alabama dropped, but Vandy did not pass them in the overall rankings just because they beat them. There is a certain element of "apples and oranges" in this argument, but the rationale still holds, especially for those who don't have any particularly warm feelings or positive impressions of our Orangemen.

It is not a good comparison. Syracuse and UNLV both have one loss. Alabama has one loss and Vanderbilt has two losses.

The coaches poll voters are either coaches who don’t see the games or SIDs who don’t care either way.

I trust the AP poll will be more kind to SU.
Seeing as most coaches have other things to do on Saturday’s I wouldn’t expect them to see many games.A lot of them probably have their wives or friends fill out their ballots.

Current Sagarin. We don't play the Top 4 in the ACC, and only one team on our schedule is currently Top 34. Our best OOC is #39. That Stanford loss hurts. Our SOS thus far is 94th.

We are exactly in the middle of the ACC (9th). So step one get into the Top half of the ACC. Step two get ahead of the Top FCS. Step three get to 5th in the ACC (25% teams above and 75% below). Step four get to 2nd in the Northeast. I think all of those are possible and realistic goals.

1. Texas #1
2. Ohio State highest B18
3. Georgia highest with an L
8. Notre Dame highest non SEC/B18
9. Penn State highest Northeast
10. Miami highest ACC
11. Iowa State highest B12
14. K State 2nd best B12
15. Clemson 2nd highest ACC
17. SMU
19. Boise State highest G5 and best MWC
23. Louisville
27. West Virginia 2nd best Northeast
30. Tulane 2nd best G5 and best AAC
35. VA Tech
36. Pitt
39. UNLV
43. Rutgers
46. Cal
49. Maryland
52. South Dakota State highest FCS
53. GA Tech
55. Cuse
61. FSU
63. Army
64. UVA
66. BC worst Northeast P4
67. Navy
70. UNC
71. Duke
80. NC State
85. Marshall
86. Wake
92. UConn
94. Stanford worst ACC and 2nd worst P4
107. Ohio
112. Purdue worst P4
115. Delaware
139. Buffalo
146. Temple
157. Holy Cross
187. UMass worst Northeast

And one was a freak win, and one was a totally doable win.

Could care less what we are ranked - I just want a record that gets us in the ACC title - that probably means running the table

Respectfully, I said there were some "apples and oranges" flaws to my example, thus implying that it wasn't a perfect comparison. However, despite the win, I don't think one could say we are categorically better than UNLV. We deserved to win, yet we were still fortunate. I would say the teams were fairly even overall.

Vandy deserved to win too, because they were better than Alabama on that day, at that time. But they are not better overall. It is more extreme, but it still illustrates the point. It is not shocking that we won, but winning does not necessarily mean we are the better team overall, and by extension, it does not mean we should be ranked higher than UNLV.

Still, I think we should have received more votes overall, and be closer (give or take a couple of spots) to UNLV. But, we don't deserve to take their spot in the Top-25 just because we won; not if you've been watching this team all season. I believe we will get better, and could be quite formidable by the end of the season, but we aren't there at this moment.

Probably should have a few more votes as we did beat a ranked team on the road but the Stanford game is going to seriously hold us back. Just beat NC State.

Be honest - watch an NFL game - everyone played in the SEC - they deserve the respect they get

149 players from Bama, Georgia or LSU. Add in Florida and it's 184, more than the entire Pac 12 (this is as of 2023).

They got more than half their players in the league from four schools.

Top heavy conference.

Nearly half the Big Ten comes from three schools: Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State.

120 players.

I'd say it comes down to haves versus have nots.

Those conferences are top heavy because their top teams have disproportionate number of NFL players.

ACC and Big 12 are much more balanced, which leads to more parity and a lack of elite level teams.

This perception is born that SEC and Big 10 are super when it's a handful of teams leading the way.
