Clean House on this roster

I don’t think you’re getting it.

The guys we are bringing in aren’t suddenly turning us into Iowa offensively.

A few of them may able to get to the rim, but we aren’t hitting water from a boat with the lack of shooting skill we are bringing in.

We need to get Judah and a ready now wing or hope JB retires if we have any shot at being good next year.
I don’t want to be Iowa. I want to be Cuse circa 2010-2012. Get guys that can rebound, guard and get up and down the damn court. We can barely clear the 10 second violation most possessions. We can’t even get the ball inbounds because our guys are so slow

Yes we need better athletes. But this is a hyperbolic comment about the offense. The numbers back it up. Syracuse has consistently been among the top 20 teams in KenPom offensive efficiency all season. Obviously tonight we struggled, but a huge part of that is losing Jesse and the adjustment to losing everything he did for us. Again, the offense isn’t the problem. It’s our horrendous DEFENSE that’s central to our struggles.
vt score about 62 points in the first 39 minutes of the game...defense was far fromm the issue in this game

I thought the most interesting thing he said in that press conference was that Frank played better because he was more comfortable due to getting more minutes.
S H O C K E R

Crazy how that works. You mean, if a coach gives a player more time on the court without the fear that one mistake will cost him time on the bench, the player can perform better? Huh, I've never considered that before.

I wouldn't single out a particular player for being a disappointment but I think not having an athletic forward is a problem on this team. To me Jimmy and Cole are the same sort of below the basket type of player. An athletic guard who can score some would also have been nice this season. I think Mintz would be a great add for next season. Team needs to get more athletic in a couple positions.

Maybe you’re exaggerating on purpose cause you’ve lost me a bit.

This team plays at a faster pace than our 2011-2013 teams.

It seems we have lost more games this year when we score 70 than we ever have.

I like our players. If we had two of them. Collectively this team’t fit well at the 1-4 positions.

Defense has predominantly been the biggest issue, but even with Dion..Scoop...Triche...Fair..KrisJo...we struggled in the half court at times.

What you truly want you aren’t getting unless we have a completely new staff or an elite lead PG.

Overall he’s been blah. Too much disappearing act stuff. He’s too old to be that up and down. And he’s terrible in the zone
Cole has been up-n-down but he was the major difference in our winning streak. His rebounding has gotten better and no, he’s not terrible in the zone.
It’s been beaten to death but the real head scratcher this year has been Jimmy and his PT.
He. Never. Sits.
We had to get used to Buddy & JG3 getting Iron Man minutes but the thought there was, either one could catch fire and make up for any defensive weaknesses. But Jimmy doesn’t have the arsenal that the other 2 guys have, and is just as weak on defense and rebounding, so it’s a little curious why he gets as much time as he has.
Yes, “Benny isn’t ready”, blah blah blah, but none of that justifies 35 mins per game for Jimmy. JB’s PT allotment has frankly become baffling. Just don’t get it.

The entire offense was Buddy and Joe chucking 3's. Most contested. So they did amazing well to make 8-17. We got nothing inside not even from Jimmy. Not unexpected without Jesse. Too many turnovers against pressure. And the officiating sucked and allowed VaTech to push and shove the whole game as well as ignoring several swipes on the arms of ball handlers that were ignored. Foul calls 18 vs 9. Total BS.

Joe is shooting almost 44 pct from 3 and has made only 3 less triples all season than Buddy. He is doing other things and had 4 deflections on defense. He might be limited in finishing but he is driving and working to get in the lane as much as possible.

Joe has played about as disciplined as you could possibly ask outside a few bad games this season. He has been better than I expected for a guy still playing out of positions.

The shots he forced he set his feet and had a good look at the hoop. They were similar to some of the things he did in HS. Also those chucks were him trying to keep us in the game to his credit he absolutely did. At 49-37 he got the assist to Buddy to make it a 9 pt game, solid D and then a bogus off foul on him. Followed by another Buddy there then Joe hit another 3 to make it 49-46.

That stretch to get it to 54-54 had Joe's imprint all over it and actually on both ends.

Then Buddy went 1 v 5 for a stretch and it was game over despite his backcourt mate playing better than him and under control.

Give Joe a real PG and with what we have seen this year he can thrive and the backcourt may do so better anyways. We have beaten him up on this board and I took my lb of flesh too but the kid deserves a massive pat on the back and I am happy he has another year.

I once thought Buddy and Jimmy would come back for next year pending Jimmy's NCAA appeal for another year. But now I'm convinced neither will be back. Whether justified or not, they must be sick of the criticism and vitriol being thrown their way for the failure of this year's team and the supposed favoritism and nepotism being given to them by their father. They must hate it for being blamed for their Dad's worst season in 46 years. Nobody in their right mind would want to come back for another year of that.

The Syracuse he is describing wasn’t good on offense in the halfcourt.
We scored a lot of points off transition from the PG pushing the ball off defensive rebounds and our wings filling lanes and getting easy buckets.
That stopped in 2014.

We have played a lot slower since 2014. Even with Ennis we weren’t running.

Our offense sucks because its become a miss or make system with no creativity whatsoever. Its all on the players to make shots.
JB wants Buddy shooting a lot because he thinks he will make a lot of shots.
If Buddy had MCW or Scoop or Dion or GMac or Devendorf or Flynn servicing him on offense he would be a lot better.

Instead we a player who is a SG and doing his best playing out of position and its all ISO.

Jim Boeheim talked about spacing and the people who believe everything he says and don’t want to actually analyze what he says think just having shooters is all you need for spacing.

When if a defense doesn’t have to worry about a player getting to the hole off the dribble why would they ever leave their shooters on defense.
The only way to get shooters open is to move the ball a lot. Which we don’t do.
Kick the ball into the paint and force a defense to collapse. We did this a little this season with Jesse. Joe did it the most and it would work.
Or get open 3’s off offensive rebounds. This would happen a little.
Or we run screens like we did for our SGs in the past. We dont do this.

I would take Andy Rautins every day of the week over Buddy.
Buddy is a nice player but Andy did more to help his offense. Andy didn’t get the shots Buddy has.

Cole has 100x the upside of Jimmy. He can’t fade in and out. Jimmy shouldn’t be on the court for Syracuse. There’s a reason he wasn’t out of HS.

Nope. Andy had to set his feet a lot faster and was also a much better defender.

Faster pace because we suck at defense. Those years I quoted I did for a reason. They got tradition hoops which are critical In college hoops. We get no easy baskets now.

From your lips…

Jimmy is a 15 minute offensive sub vs the right match-up. He has zero value on defense and as a big minutes guy. He also isn't half the passer Marek was. Marek coming back for year 5 would have been far superior to bringing in Jimmy.

I don’t even think he’s that. I’ve seen my full share of stumbling and bumbling drives. His footwork and the weird hand switching is just low D1 level indicative. If we have had a slower player at I don’t know who it was (maybe Cole? Or Blackwell)?

And that's fair. I said it last night too but he looked like he was running in cement.

We are what we are which is a 500 team that can win if we shoot lights out.

Correct. We suck at defense. We used to win a lot of games when we scored in the 50’s if our offense was bad because or defense was elite. The main issue now is if our offense is bad we don’t have our defense to fall back on.

And back then you had Flynn, Devo, Scoop, Trish, Waiters. All guys who could beat their man and put pressure on the defense.
They could score at the rim or hit an open man on the drive for 3.

The roster has not been the problem and it certainly wasn't the main issue yesterday. VT was the better coached team yesterday. They had a game plan and the players knew what it was and executed it. Our team seemed to have no clue how to deal with pressure double teams. I couldn't keep count of all the wide open rolls Frank had where guys (I won't name names) didn't even look to pass hut rather tried to dri ble through the double or pass to someone else. The lack of subbing killed the team yesterday. It's no coincidence that they pulled away in the last 5 minutes of each half.

Agree. Issue is that we had the solution to this issue and he left. Now what happens next year? Hopefully Mintz? What if Buddy comes back?

Joe deserves to play at least one year at 2G.

I actually like Jimmy’s “old man” game. He would’ve been perfect as that change-of-pace low post option to get a couple of buckets down low. Maybe in quick 5 mins stretches.
But….35 minutes per game? On both offense AND defense? With no repercussions for garbage play, no comments or nitpicking from the HC who seemingly can’t help calling out other players in the media? Weird.

With the right point guard, I have no doubt Joe at the 2G would average 22ppg while hitting 4 to 5 threes a game. His legs would be a lot fresher than they are now, and as someone stated he is hitting at a 44% clip

We need to stop reminiscing about the glory days because it’s not happening again under JB.

We had this same clean house roster discussion Frank Howards senior season.
Are any of our players this season going to make ACC first or second team?
I imagine Jesse had a chance but Duke bias.
