Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

Not surprisingly, a big nothing burger:

Beadnell sure wears a s---eating grin well, doesn't he?

Dustin's wrong. This is a bad look.

But this is transparent grandstanding from these establishment Republicans. Wish they showed half this much outrage when Mahoney appointed her completely unqualified cousin to be parks commissioner, for example.

Honestly, all elected officials should have to drive for Uber or Lyft while on the clock. Maybe 2 hours, 3 days a week? I'll vote for any elected official that drives for Lyft. That's my new rule.

They should have to have a little identity badge too that lets us know we're getting picked up by elected officials. That'd be fun.

Yup, not a great look. But this grandstanding nitwit just held a press conference for $5,000 worth of "missed work." And he did it without even notifying the offending party of the wrongdoing that he was accusing him of. Classless drivel from a partisan hack.

so this was simply more about Beadnell's self promotion than anything else. I wonder what type of improprieties would be found in his own backyard, he must think he's untouchable.

Obviously that guy isn’t rich nor getting many handouts. There’s a reason those running for office either need big bucks themselves or some rich money bag supporting them who they are beholden to. Also a clue that the local Democratic Party mustn't have much money in their war chest.

Cheating time on the job though won’t help his cause and pretty dumb.

I'm sure this pissing match will end well. Highlight is mine (for the most salient point she makes). I have heard that this Beadnell character spends a good deal of time at Bellevue. Whether or not that's appropriate I'll leave for others to decide, but the hypocrisy is impressive.

Dear Comptroller Beadnell:
I write in regard to your Monday, September 9, 2019 press conference relative to your office's investigation into Election Commissioner Czarny's work hours. I did not hear in your remarks the question of whether Democratic Commissioner Czarny met his 35 hour per week required work time. I know personally he spends far more than that many hours per week on his work, but as you stated yesterday, "Czarny has sometimes worked his second job as a rideshare driver during the regular business hours of the Board of Elections without taking vacation time off from the county job. The overlap was infrequent but improper."
You also stated you "would have conducted a similar investigation against Republican Elections Commissioner Michelle Sardo if the same circumstances had arisen." All of this review based on a phone tip.
Interestingly, you also stated you "briefed Tom Dadey, the Onondaga County Republican Party Chairman, on the matter and understand that your allegations could be regarded as politically motivated because Czarny is a Democrat." It's unclear where in your non-partisan professional role it would necessitate contacting a political party official, yet similarly I did not receive the same courtesy call as Chair of the Onondaga County Democratic Party.
You described yesterday the Onondaga County Comptroller’s office is one that investigates and audits county offices. I am glad to hear this as I received a phone call tip yesterday that several Onondaga County employees have spent enormous hours (far more than 94 over 18 months as you communicated Commissioner Czarny spent), not utilizing accruals, which you stated were necessary, at the Bellevue Country Club during work hours. I'm sure this same level of improper but frequent time spent is something the Comptroller's office would be very concerned with as ensuring everyone is assessed equally is the foundation of independent oversight.
To that end, I respectfully request the same level of subpoena review and scrutiny of the Bellevue Country Club's records over the same period of time, to ensure County employees/elected officials were not abusing work hour improprieties and forward the same to District Attorney Fitzpatrick for his review of potential illegalities. As with the time sheets you received for your prior investigation, I am sure sure Bellevue maintains a tee time system where a simple download of names and times can be easily acquired. If you require specific County employee names I will forward those along upon your request.
I look forward to your thorough review and upcoming investigation into my inquiry.
Sincerely,
Pamela J. Hunter
Chair, Onondaga County Democratic Party"

A perfect response. One that I'm sure whipped the s*** eating grin right off his face.

This comes as no surprise to anyone, but it's still good to have it out there in the open. Of course this "grassroots" organization has been backed by big corporate money and other special interests, and of course the politicians who support it are having their pockets stuffed by Destiny.

What's odd is that someone screwed up in re-registering the name earlier this summer. This information was known but unverifiable for years.

this was so obvious all along, glad that it's finally out there in the open. Of course the Congel group was lining the politicians pockets.

I'm sure whoever did it was fired today. That's how they roll.

Hopefully this is more successful than the last attempt at a grocery store downtown (where the Saltine Warrior sports bar is currently in the Amos Building):

They say they want to base it on Eataly, which I may be mistaken but I thought the proposed Salt City Market was going to emulate. I like their idea though and good that someone is open on a Sunday other than Dino.

My dream is to open a cheese shop in Armory, maybe when I retire I'll be able to scale down and make that dream come true. I went to a cheese shop in Galway, Ireland that was just fabulous, giant hunks and wheels of cheese from everywhere. At the time I'd never seen anything like it and there certainly isn't anything like it around here. Shop was about the size of a small bedroom and the owner was an ornery hundred year old Irishman. It was awesome.

Somewhat similar, I guess, but to my knowledge, the Salt City Market won't have a grocery/convenience store piece to it. Also, a number of bars/restaurants are open downtown on Sundays: Pastabilities, Hops Spot, Blue Tusk, Otro Cinco, Shaughnessy's, The Mission and I'm sure there are others.

The Downtown Committee put out a brief new spot today. Thought folks here might be interested in it.

That song is weak! I did like that they had someone shopping for what looked like CDs.

mostly about what to do with the BQE but some good references to the lasting effect of the Robert Moses highway system throughout NY

"To understand what could happen with the BQE, it’s necessary to understand what highways did to cities across the state. “Robert Moses shaped a city and its sprawling suburbs,” Robert Caro wrote in his 1974 tome “The Power Broker.” “And to an extent that would have astonished analysts of urban trends had they measured the implications of his decades of handiwork, influenced the destiny of all the cities of twentieth century America.” For upstate cities like Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, highways accelerated the decline of their urban cores, as middle-class, mostly white residents moved to the emerging suburbs. This sucked much of the tax base out of city governments, which then had less money to serve their remaining residents that were already suffering from the decline of the once-dominant manufacturing sector."
