NIL and the transfer portal essentially guarantees the ability to turn around a program overnight. That’s why I’m not getting worked up over all of this. If Iowa state can go from 2 wins to top 15 in 2 years, I’m sure Syracuse can get back to perennial contender.

It has in the short term. I am still curious if that is sustainable and how the NCAA and potential mega conferences play into it. JBs reticence over the portal and his comments in general are against the grain of using these tools.

I'm not convinced that more change isn't on the horizon that will clip the wings of both in the future. It's extremely fluid at the moment.

All that said we have missed out in the short term to take advantage of these tools and it will really suck if they are diluted soon before we get to reap the benefits.

Perception doesn’t matter, it literally changes every year as the landscape shifts. JB leaves, the perception changes. Syracuse wins 25 games, the perception changes. The ACC has a couple more down years in a row? The perception changes. Syracuse hires Sean Miller, the perception changes.

Iowa State, Rutgers, K-state, Indiana, ohio state all have had perception change multiple times over the last decade both good and bad. How many times do you even think about them when there isn’t a game imminent?

Is having no 2023 recruits great? No, but would you feel differently is they got 3 of the 22 guys last and 3 of 22 this year? You brought in a 6 person class and the overwhelming argument on this fan site has been transfers are better than freshman anyway so bother going after 2nd or 3rd choice guys when you can just get transfers who are better anyway?

As for the money, JB doesn’t decide who gets paid or not so his opinion on the matter should be of zero consequence. He literally cannot impact those decisions without committing a violation so his comments are largely unimportant. He can hate it and still benefit from it at the same time, that’s what many coaches are doing.

And JB never hates on kids for leaving early, that’s fans. Most times he’s the one telling them to go.

Lol, nope. Wrong. He’s done the thing where he talks too much and says the wrong thing about many of these guys. The comments are out there for all to see - and they fuel perception. And we recruit like crap. Which is why coach is reduced to celebrating playing close against “top teams”(one of which has lost 8 games and isn’t even ranked.)

95% of fans want him to continue coaching, so why wouldn't he??

The poll results here are not only wrong but should be completely inverted, I guess.

I have a hard time actually believing he believes this and that he's that delusional... Which would mean he is now trolling the fan base out of spite.

Welcome to the start of the end. It's happening... and it's already getting really ugly.

It will get uglier.
95% is plainly wrong but you’re deluding yourself if you don’t think there isn’t a very substantial portion of the fanbase that doesn’t want to see JB forced out, even if it means another year of mediocre results by SU standards. I’m sure there’s another overlapping segment that remembers what happened when Pasqualoni was precipitously canned and similarly will let this play out.

I’m thinking Jim doesn’t get off easily for his comments this time. Just a guess. What that means I don’t know. These comments are different.

and my point is, whether you do it today or next year, the perception will still change. This argument that Syracuse is digging a hole it cannot get out from is a reactionary take and doesn’t live in any sort of reality.
I agree in the sense that this is probably one of those things where the media and other insiders care more than most fans, even devout ones.

And I agree that winning cures all, and it's possible even in podunk places like Kansas State or Texas Tech. Personally I think there's a lot of opportunity if the program is willing to get serious about NIL and the portal, as everyone in the area knows who the basketball players are, which is an asset. But keeping the program on the right track requires embracing NIL and the portal, not just tolerating it as Boeheim's words and actions have conveyed. Even bluebloods like Kansas recognize that and have acted accordingly.

Transfer portal gives lower tier schools (esp mid majors) the ability to grab talent that historically isn’t available to them. Kansas St and Iowa St are examples of teams that did a complete 180 by using the transfer portal.
ISU and particularly K State are historically successful programs.

He’s also not happy his home grown freshmen are playing against fairly well paid mercenaries who may have been at several prior schools.
Ha, then make sure you supplement your sophomore and junior classes adequately! Oh that's right, that might have meant guys who could take mins from buddy and joe etc and we didn't want that.

That Cornell squad must have been stacked up front!

Since we’re talking lineups and not recruiting, who should have played more minutes at Forward on that team?

Benny was a disaster. One of the Centers I guess?

Probably should’ve recruited better, or kept the guys that were here the previous year then.

It would have been nice if they decided to stay. Unfortunately, independent of how they were or weren’t treated, they decided not to stick around and be successful. Teenagers make bad decisions.

And when he leaves the perception will… change! :wow face:

Ugly is we bring JB back next year and have a season like Louisville is having this season.

Its somewhat likely that is what would happen. Yeah I like Taylor and Brown too but are they 15ppg guys next year that can carry us and prevent that from happening if expected departures occur and we get Geno Thorpe'd on the transfers?

The counter will always be it was the guys who left fault not the staff. We just go round and round.

I'm starting to think Marty has deployed his lurkers upon the sports forums...

Meanwhile mediocre season after mediocre season just keeps on passing by.
A foot note in the grand scheme, but a big deal now because we’re living it

This is the part I can’t get over. The fact that “almost” beating teams is now a good thing. How far we have fallen…

As to Gus i have no doubt that he is both mentally and physically capable of coaching another 5 years. The question is will he be successful.
For me, i support Syracuse athletic teams. The coaches and the players come and go. My loyalty is to the team. Not a coach or player. Its why i can applaud and be critical of a player or coach.
Take Jim. I appreciate his genius which was on display yesterday. He coached a really good game. We dont win without his coaching. I also cringe when he makes outrageous comments and or acts like a petulant bully in a press conference. See im not loyal to Jim. Im loyal to Syracuse. What is good for the health of our programs and our community is where my loyalty lies. Same with politicians and business leaders or my priest.
I cheer for the institution. The people that represent and run them are a means to an end. They have the responsibility to do the best job they can possibly do to enhance the institution. On the other hand they need to be provided the resources and support to do their jobs.

What makes me sick is the inability for some to see this, to acknowledge that you can be objective when it comes to Jim as a coach or a player. Its ok to give praise and criticism. Focus on the success of Syracuse and it becomes easy. Focus on a coach or player and your priorities are in my opinion misplaced.

We'll see. A lot depends how many feet he puts in his mouth going forward in the national media.

He's getting called out for his shortcomings in the national media now and based on the recent cbs article and his post retractions, he's more than ready to fire shots at the drop of a hat laden with complete BS. He's shown he can get away with this in local post game pressers where "Jim just says stuff"... But with national writers and casters?? One thing for sure, "Boeheim decline at Syracuse" is on the national radar screen now.

He's never had to deal with this before - the national media really coming at him. I don't think he will handle it well and this article is proof positive of that. It's not in his nature.
