Does JW have the gravitas and backing

i mean...5 years ago...i thought JB should be able to go out on his terms, how he wants to...

but its getting close to the point of no return...

he could literally kill the program if he keeps this going the way it is...

8 years without being ranked? yikes. i read an article today that used the phrase the fallen program or something to describe su...ouch

his system is not a winning system anymore and he either doesnt realize or doesnt wanna realize or whatever...

its so hard to watch now.
Hasn't been eight years. Syracuse was ranked in the top 25 nine months ago.

Yeah for clarity I am not saying we get him even with an over the top offer. I am just saying as an AD you look at someone who only is making 3.2 mill and see if there is interest if you like the guy. Thats it. Oats was the name being used but throw in any name barring stupid stuff like coack K or something. Especially if you think they can lift the program. Its the ADs job to sell it. People are saying you dont even kick the tires. To me thats crazy and people are acting like his 3.2 is high rent distract. Hell university of Utah pays Larry K 4 mill. Cooley at Providence makes 3.4 mill. Providence folks. I am pretty sure Syracuse could pony 4 to 5 mill without batting an eye. Oh and this is what we look like when we win.

Terrific post.

But it's ok to hire Gerry McNamara.

You know, the university is going to lose a LOT of money if they let the basketball team go completely off the rails with a guy who has never been a head coach before.

We have average more than 40,000 most of the time since we opened the Dome. Our peak years were 1987 to 2006, averaging more than 40,000 per game every single year in that stretch.

It wasn't until Robinson's 3rd year that the attendance began to tank. 35K and then 33K in Robinson's last 2 seasons. Marrone's first year, we didn't quite average 40K, but were close, just beat 40K in years 2 and 3. We averaged 45K in his last year and then he left.

Shafer was a disaster. Attendance averaged 36K in his 3 years.

Dino has also done poorly at the gate. How many years of that can a program take before people just stop coming? Aren't they paying attention?

Their game day improvements have been marginal, to be honest. You have to be willilng to spend money before it's too late to get your customers back.
Citing the football program is probably the anthesis of the point you are trying to argue about spending. The university and the big donors are investing heavily in the football program. Dome reno, coaching salaries, adding support staff, the Lally Complex. Prior to those investments, SU ranked 7th in the ACC in football related spending as of 2019. Just guessing here... SU will soon be in the top 4 in ACC.

As for the "marginal" improvements to the game day experience, did you attend any games this fall?

Bama a football school. For the right money I believe Oats would come to Syracuse. He would take us to top 10 every year guaranteed. Championship contender every year.

But even prime Jim Boeheim didn't have SU in the top ten every year.

And that putz is no Jim Boeheim.

I’ve never advocated for GMAC. The rest is football and irrelevant

The same people with the “football school” takes are the same ones who think the NBA has the same style it did in the late 90s - mid 00s. They’re out of touch.
Yeah. I used to watch 10 CBB a games a week and 2 nba. Now I watch 10 NBA and 2 CBB

That's because he would be a terrible hire.

And for the record, that's who JB advocated to be the next head coach waiting, above Red.

People were saying JB is going to choose the successor, or that the AD will limit his options to in house candidates are out of their minds.

I don’t understand the RED situation at all.

How many games did they play as a ranked team 9 months ago?

Zero.

There is no defending the intentional decision to enter the year with nothing behind the starters.

Why is Oats discussed as an option so much? I know he’s young and has had a lot of success. I also think he grew up a Syracuse fan, but don’t understand the obsession.

An internal hire is small time thinking, and could really hurt us.

I'm 100% serious when I say that I would prefer Rick Pitino on a 4 year deal as our bridge coach before he retires to hiring Gerry, Autry or Hopkins.

The more the bottom falls out the lesser the possibility (maybe?) it’s internal. Thing is the bottom has never truly fallen out under JB.

I think JB by staying on and having not one, but two sons starting pretty much will be a deterrent for allowing him to pick the next coach. JW should be able to use that as leverage for the need to start afresh with new blood and a more youthful facing program to attract recruits. It’s just stale and has been for a while.

Yeah. I used to watch 10 CBB a games a week and 2 nba. Now I watch 10 NBA and 2 CBB
It was a slow process but I converted as well. It does seem when I watch CBB it’s in bunches. Anyone that loves basketball and doesn’t watch the nba is really missing out.

Perhaps we at least wait and see what happens before saying something may or may not be done? I am not hearing people saying that they have insiders feedback and Oats is saying he has zero interest. I am hearing better weather and lower taxes and that Alabama has football? Alabama is hot as balls, gets hurricanes, floods and gets tornadoes. Per the World Population Review it has a Quality of Life Rating of 49 out of 50 states. It's economy rank is 45. It's healthcare is ranked 46th and education is 50th dead effin last! Alabama is literally by measure one of the worst places to live in the United states. Lastly I believe he is getting paid $3.2 million. Not $4 mill, not $5 mill, not 7 or 8 mill. JW could pay this guy easily enough money unless Alabama uses their vaunted football money to take him into the stratosphere.
Alabama is a strange place. Its coyote ugly the weather is horrible. Why any black athlete would actually consider going to the University of Alabama is beyond me. Racism is in the chip there and will be for generations to come.
I know this is a strong post but if you spend any real non tourist time in the state you will understand.
Having posted this i dont think there is any chance that Oats is the next SU coach. As to Alabama i find the entire state scary strange.

Yeah, well southern man don't want you around anyhow

One thing is for sure, it’s going to be fascinating to see how it plays out. It’s legitimately something that has not happened in over 4 decades.

Maybe suggest someone you would rather have than him?

Cooley's got PC at #16 but they are still just an average Big East team that got blown out by Marquette by 30 tonight and he doesn't bring in huge classes.

We are a very good job and can be picky. You can have success here and not have to be an afterthought to football this job is like UNC or Duke. Villanova and Gonzaga are proof that players don't want to go to football first schools.

Alabama's bench might be a top 10 team in the country. And hes only in his third year. There is no way he won't take the first blue blood offer he gets. People who think he spends the rest of his career in Tuscaloosa are insane.

I guess he 'could' take the Syracuse job and leave us for UCLA or Kansas but I doubt he would. Write him a blank check.

Yet their black football athletes are treated like gods.

You missed the point. It's a revenue thing. Our last 3 football hires have been (1) disaster, (2) awful, and (3) one shining moment and the rest so far is crap.

Our fans held up pretty good, attendance-wise, until Year 3 of Gerg, then it dropped.
When Shafer was coach, the attendance was lower than for Gerg. With Dino, it's lower still.

Each time we went in the can in football, fewer fans came back when we hit successive "rock bottoms".

At some point, programs have to make money.

With 20 home games vs. 6 or 7 in football, at our school basketball drives the live event revenue. TV is all about football, but they make way more money off of hoops attendance because of 3 times the number of home games per season.

They really can't afford to screw up this next hire. Our basketball attendance can't afford to take the hit. I do see that it has been a pretty steady 21-22,000 every year since the 1996 Final Four team.

I would hate to see it fall off to only 15,000 a year or less. The Dome is awful with so few fans in it. That's why the next hoops hire is essential to get someone who is an exciting hire, somebody who almost guarantees a return to the non-Bubble, non-cringy press conference "conversation".

Good post. This will seem like hyperbole, but Syracuse basketball is often the one thing people know about Syracuse when you travel outside of the state.

Well, that and the snow.
And the salt. And the salt potatoes.
And Hoffman's. And Wegman's.
But that's pretty much the list.

Because he coached Buffalo, and they beat us. That's why. Do you watch the games?
