Going to miss Jimmy when he is gone

Why?
What has he shown to be given the keys to the job?

I give GMac credit for getting Sidibe it helps alienate worrying over recruiting but the guy should not get a top 10-15 job just because he played here.

If he wants the job find a HC job and prove you can do it. JB will be gone in 4-5 years and if he proves it then fine. If he stays on the bench the next 4-5 years he better not be the next HC.

Four or five years is a long time. It is very pre-mature to say if Gerry has what it takes or not to be the next man up. Mike is proving that proper grooming under Jimmy can lead to success.

Also, what about Red, why shouldn't he be a candidate if we promote from within ?

I do not like the coach in waiting idea. Hope we do not go there again.

Whether we promote from within or not may well depend on the success of the program over the next several years. If we keep blundering along as a bubble team, some outside new blood would probably be worth the risk, if we get our mojo back and can compete at the top of the ACC and have some deep tourney runs them maybe an internal promotion and continuity would make sense.

I am totally open either way at this point in time.

The board needs to stay out of The Who should be next coach for Syracuse basketball business. Ya all have zero clue what you’re talking about.

If we took board consensus we would have below average Shaka Smart here right now.

Our board know it alls complained about Hopkins so much because he was viewed as JB lite 2.0 they helped run him across the country.

In hindsight, I think once Mike knew that Buddy was coming here or likely to come here that it would mean Jimmy would not be stepping down anytime soon & that he simply got tired of waiting, especially when an attractive gig opened up on his home coast.

I would take Autry over GMac all day long.

I agree, but people complained about Hop any chance they could get the past three years. I can dig up 20 threads on it.

Hop had the job. He wasn’t going to wait anymore.
JB was done after this year.
Hop left because he didn’t want to force JB out and with the roster construction he was inheriting a rebuild and after his 2016 9 game stint knew he had no patience from the fanbase.

These are the coaches the board wants:

Shaka Smart:Mediocre to below average. Can’t win more games than JB with top 10 recruiting classes.

Buzz Williams:Mediocre to slightly above average. Plays an aesthetically pleasing brand of basketball, but his teams play zero
defense.

Jay Wright: Pipe Dream. Will be in his 60’s when JB calls it quits and is a lifetime Philly guy.

These ideas are terrible.

I wanted Billy Donovan thinking he would crap out of the NBA by around this time when JB was done.

Donovan isn’t coming back to college though. Right now I would want a Dan Hurley or Ed Cooley if we had to replace JB.

i speak only for myself but i had nothing against hopkins. but i wanted him to get some head coaching first before assuming the helm. seems like he finally got the message and is better off for it.
same deal with gerry or red. no way either gets the keys until they prove they can pass the drivers test.

I think maybe the Cheating in recruiting has to do with why Donovan and Stevens are NBA guys. I think everyone needs to see how this investigation shakes out before declaring who the next coach should be.

We get more in Tv money from football than we profit from basketball.
Basketball at SU is one of the few real money makers nationally because of the size of the Dome but football generates the TV dollars.

I understand all that. I do. But I'm saying from an exposure and national perception, Syracuse basketball is what the majority of people know. And if that brand slips, it hurts the image of the school. Plus, all alums from 2003-present have seen from football is losing. That's a 15-year gap. I think it will change and if everything continues to trend the way it is, we'll get back to fringe Top 25 or maybe better each year. But for the time being and for the near future, Syracuse basketball is the most important asset the AD has.

Spot on. Our top program by far is basketball. We are using football to pay the bills. I hope the administration realizes this and doesn't just hire internally and not conduct a national search.

i find it a bit alarming that when i read the board it's the orphan annies talking about NEXT YEAR.
BASKETBALL, FOOTBALL and now even LACROSSE. the entire trinity has sunk to future hopes.

I thought this year was next year, honestly. Then Lydon leaves, Thompson leaves, Dungey gets hurt and we're back to where we started.

I do think next year has the potential to be a great year for FB & MBB. That being said, if we play like we did at Miami I think we'll make the NCAA Tourney. And from there, as we saw in 2016, anything can happen.

How much do you know about either person to make that claim?
Autry has coached under two other college HC.

He has been a coach longer.

Autry has a serious relationship with DC AAU teams.

Autry is the associate HC.

Give me Autry all day long over GMac.

GMac has never been around another college HC besides JB.

I have no dog in the fight but imo all of that would be minimally effective in terms of predicting which one would be a better HC.

You're not?

Well, that's a concern...
I am absolutely not confident.

It’s much more likely SU will be like Wake Forest than UNC or Duke post-JB.

Hiring a new coach is a huge crap shoot. There will be a much greater risk of transition-upset because of JB’s unique system. And SU is now in a truly tough Conference.

Kind of a high bar there, Townie. Duke or UNC?

true. but JB clearly hasn't proven to be able to crack the top echelon of the ACC. time for change ?
do they make a foam hand with 6 fingers ? we can proudly wave it and chant " we're #6 " every year.

I actually look at what has happened and don’t talk without looking at facts.
You think Indiana and Georgetown have been dead programs.
They haven’t.
You also ignore the fact Syracuse doesn’t make the tournament every year. We miss it a lot more than you realize.
You also ignore the fact Syracuse has a giant fanbase, good recruiting base, great conference affiliation. The job is more appealing than you think.
The Butler coach left for Ohio State in the summer and he has taken over for Thad Matta who got stale and the program is already back in the top 15.

You think only JB can do it. Sorry
I don’t think that.
Does anyone actually think Ohio State is good?

Next guy could easily do worse. My bet is that is what happens.

It will NOT be an inside guy, just because.

IF somebody on the current (or former - Hi Hop!;)) staff is worthy, and interested - then hell yeah, they should be on the short list.

I like Buzz, but I think we can do better.
Guys like Chris Mack or Mick Cronin are young, and have been successful at a high level.

Honestly - I'd love for Coach Q to be the next Men's coach, except for the fact that it would mess up the Women's hoops program. LOVE the way his teams play.

I imagine they will be exactly like UNC. Brief downturn, then figure the way back.

what an optimist. or rather nostalgist . you think your peak energy years are 40's or 70's ?
