Marrone

Who hired Schwarz? Yeah, I think that was a Marrone decision, Schwarz didn't get hired on his own... and quite frankly wasn't a proven great DC before he got to Buffalo. He certainly was not a good HC.

Schwartz was only hired because Marrone's choice for DC -Pettine - was hired away. Under Schwartz, and without a key starter (Alonso) for the entire season, the defense was much improved from the Pettine D.

If you're going to praise Marrone for leading the Bills to a winning record, it's odd that you say that Schwartz was not a good HC. After all, Schwartz led the Lions to their first playoff berth in over a decade in 2011...

And you know how they'd have done here? How? There was even talk that maybe Rice would end up at DB.
LOL no coach would have put ray rice at rb. Not even g-rob.

Jimmy Sexton is Money's agent - also represents Saban and others. I am sure it is Sexton that came up with that opt out clause. He is the shrewd one.

Yeah, just not so amazing since spy gate.

Was it the 7 division championships or 4 AFC Champ game appearances or 2 Super Bowl appearances that aren't amazing?

Saban Will Stay in Miami...

Nick Saban going to Alabama is the biggest non-story of this non-playoff season.

For slightly more than a month now, since the Crimson Tide stupidly fired Mike Shula, Saban has been the target of one-sided rumors and innuendo that he would be offered the job in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama representatives actually contacted Saban's agent, Jimmy Sexton, to gauge interest. The response, according to Saban, was that he was flattered but not interested.

Since that time, the fickle media have steadfastly refused to believe Saban's subsequent denials. Even his most recent, and most explicit, denial did little to keep the frothing dogs off of him.

"I'm not going to be the Alabama coach, said Saban on December 21.

Last Wednesday, during a press conference with the Indianapolis media, he apparently reached the end of his rope.

''I'm going to put (the rumors) away right now. I'm just making a rule that I'm never going to comment on something like that again because every time you comment, it makes another story. So I'm done.

Looks like Marrone has a folder on Saban and Sexton on how to generate money.

We should offer marrone $4m for 4 years. Thats what a proactive AD would do.

I absolutely think Marrone maximized talent productivity. But he didn't upgrade the talent level - and at the skill positions (QB, WR) it decreased. As I said previously, he was two miracle drives from 5-7 his last year. How does that make him great at his job?
You don't think Marrone upgraded the talent from the GRob years? Wow, that's a new angle.

After he leaves, Bills fans can console themselves by going back to their new normal of winning 5 games and missing the playoffs with double digit losses.

As a die hard Bills fan, I wasn't as down on Marrone as many others were, however I still wasn't sold. Yeah, we won 9 games and had some pretty impressive wins (at Detroit, GB), however Marrone also cost this team a shot at the playoffs by habitually punting on 4th and short situations late in games. The offense, and more specifically the O-line quickly regressed under Marrone, and his thin skin also kept some pretty good, young players off of the field while they were in his dog house (Robert Woods early, Mike Williams was handled like a disaster, Ej Manuels very short leash, Urbik being demoted for no reason and replaced with far inferior players). He had issues for sure. I don't think this move hurts the Bills too much to be honest. This team won this season because of the defense. Marrone did not have a hand in that as much as Jim Schwartz did in taking that unit to a new level from last season.

As for Marrone, I think this speaks volumes about the guys character. he has now quit on two separate programs now because he did not get what he wanted. First, he left 'Cuse because he did not get the facilities that he demanded (according to rumors) and now he leaves the Bills because he got stiff armed and rejected when trying to make a power play on a new owner. I say good for Pegula here! Who wants a guy that's going to quit every time he doesn't get what he wants?

Four million reasons to force the issue. His agent really worked Brandon over.

It's funny how the bills and sabres ended up with these business clowns sticking their fingers in everything when ownership wasn't up to it. Brandon for bills and Larry Quinn for the sabres
St. Doug never takes the Bills job without that opt out clause with the specter of an ownership change during his contract. Shrewd move and I give him credit for exercising it. No point in having an opt out for leverage if you don't use it. Pigula said no to his demands to extend assistants and get more control over personnel. Doug will have a new gig by the end of the week with an extra $4 mil in his pocket. Careful what you wish for Bills fans or you might get a third decade of suckitude.

The talk about how good a coach he is is almost irrelevant.

This was a d i c k move in every sense of the word. If the Jets get him, they deserve him.

If I were even considering hiring him, the way that he left Buffalo would convince me not to do it. More and more, he comes across like someone you can't trust.
It's only a d i c k move to fans. This is a business decision all the way. Fans need to get over themselves and remove emotion from the situation.

Thanks for your concern. People outside buffalo act like buffalo should be happy with being eliminated from playoff contention later than usual. People around buffalo think those people can go themselves.

When the bills have good coaches they go to the playoffs. When they don't , they don't. Marrone is hoping to be the first coach to leave buffalo that ever did anything special.

So now apparently both of my favorite teams (SU and the Bills) can only be mediocre if Doug Marrone is the head coach. Otherwise they will be helpless losers.

Funny thing is that those saying that about the Bills appear blind to the fact that any college football fan who still cares enough says that about Syracuse. They're probably wrong though.

The world needs more saints. And they need to send them to Central/Western NY.

The Buffalo Bills are a hapless organization. I lived in Buffalo for a few years while in grad school. I remember how Bills fans used to tell me they had the QB of the future... Rob Johnson. I think they were right given how their "future" turned out.

Baby steps. I live in Rochester surrounded by Bills fans. I feel their pain every November when they are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. At least this year there was a reason to stay interested up until the last few weeks besides jockeying for draft position after pulling a guy off the street to run the offense. I think a lot of that credit goes to the coach for pulling that off and this season could have been lots worse. Even though I root for the GMen, I'd like to see Buffalo do well for the people of WNY

For people that hate Marrone they most likely hate him because he left Syracuse...understandable but you can't hate him as a coach. Both places he has gone he has turned around horrible football teams to teams that are respectable if not more and left them in good hands. You can't blame him for leaving places where if he left it would be better for him and his family cause I sure the heck would do the same thing.

Except he's shown progress despite setbacks. Once they have a QB, they'll be a double digit win team every year. Beggars of the NFL can't be choosers, but he's done pretty well there, all things considered. Giants fans are mad because they've won 2 super bowls in the last handful of years. Jets fans are mad because Rex got them to an AFC Champ game. Bills fans are mad because their record gets better, roster gets depleted due to injuries and the Organization refuses to give the coach an extension. Complete delusion.

You're telling me he could've won 10 with a great defense and a good QB? Sweet. That puts him in the same category as six billion other people.

Make it a great place to coach and you'll have better odds of making a great hire. Pigula just showed the gate to their best coach since Levy- over what? A vote of confidence in the staff by giving extensions and more say in the roster? Doesn't sound like a step in the right direction to me unless Pigula can pull a rabbit. Something to be said for stability in building a program. Great franchises like the Steelers, Pats, and yes the Giants don't pull the plug every two years. Good luck starting over again with no qb and no 1st rounder.

Bill Polian was considering coming back because Marrone was there. He told them today thanks but no thanks.

Oh man if that's true that is so typical Buffalo Bills. No wonder they can't get out of their own way

The ownership groups of those franchises probably didn't give $4M paid opt out clauses.

How do you run a successful franchise with no leverage? (Other than of course giving Doug Marrone, the only man who can win football games, a lifetime contract).

Maybe the Bills will actually discover and hire one of your 6 billion. Can't wait to see the Bills record next year at this time now that they've gotten rid of that dead weight Marrone. Myself, I'm hoping that HCDM tires of the NFL in a few years and does a Harbaugh by returning to his alma mater.
