NBA Thread 2022-23 Season

Every night with the Knicks is a new adventure

This is a fun one

Curry and Jokic are easy ones. Giannis is a very interesting debate. Dame? Not sure

Nets is an interesting one; Durant is obviously the best player to ever play for the Nets, but Kidd played there for so long. Plus Dr. J if we're including ABA (which why shouldn't we?)

The Nets stat that amazed me the other day when I heard it, is their all time-leading scorer is Brook Lopez

Is Ja Morant that far from being the best Grizzly ever over either Gasol or Mike Conley? You can make the argument that since none were ever superstars and Morant has had the best seasons (arguably) with team success that he could be it. But press me to vote and I would go with Gasol as of now.

I looked at things from a further perspective of which teams have a player who while not there as of now could reasonably be the best by the time their career is over.

In terms of likelihood (highest to lowest):

Memphis - Ja Morant vs Conley / Gasol / Gasol : As discussed above

Dallas - Luka Doncic vs Dirk Nowitzki. (Obviously its not close now, but Luka's peak seasons to date are arguably better than Dirk's)

Phoenix - Devin Booker has a chance. Phoenix despite being in the league for a long time has no easily identifiable long term franchise player. Booker 2 years away from being the franchise leading scorer. In terms of quality the Suns greatest player is probably Steve Nash.

Charlotte - Lamelo Ball vs Kemba Walker?? - Not sure who the best Charlotte player ever is, and I'm not thinking it will end up being Lamelo Ball, but its not out of the question if he steps up his game.

Bradley Beal may end up as the Wizards leading franchise scorer by nearly 10,000 points if he plays out this contract in Washington. But I can't see him being seen as greater as Unseld or Hayes.

I see no way this doesn’t end up with Luka and Kyrie hating each other

Yeah... I get that Kyrie has value but this is highway robbery given his track record. Nets get two good pieces that should plug right in plus two picks

Eh, I don’t know feels like Nets are limited in a battle vs the top teams.

I wonder if Durant demands out next (Again).

how about this for a hot take. Durant back to Warriors for Kuminga, Poole, and Wiseman.

not that I would do it, but I wonder if Warriors panic

That would be interesting. Tough time seeing Poole being offered in that deal though.

Evaluation depends on whether Kyrie is signing the 2 yr extension, a 4 yr deal or is a rental.

How is Kyrie as a catch and shoot guy ?

I've followed the Nets since they were in Jersey. Taking the bus from PABT to go the games at the Meadowlands. I've never been more frustrated with ownership than I am now.

I thought about all of those as well.

I'll start with Dallas to combine this with the Kyrie trading. Luka at his best is better than Dirk, but Dirk did win an mvp, a title, made 2 finals, and has a statue in front of the building. If Luka spends like ten years or more with Dallas I would say he will definitely pass him, but I think we can now officially put Luka on the clock for a trade demand, so... (yes i am projecting a bit here, but sue me)

Memphis: Ja certainly looks like he will be the guy here. Probably another couple of seasons? A finals run this year could be enough.
Charlotte: Is definitely Kemba right now. Ball has a good shot of passing him.
Phoenix: Right now you're looking at either Nash or Barkley. Barkley wasn't there for too long, but he did win an MVP and take them to the finals. Nash was the 2x MVP, though you could convince me he didn't really deserve either one. I can see Booker taking this one.
Wash: I agree with you.

How is Kyrie as a catch and shoot guy ?

38% on catch and shoot 3's this year. Prior year 41%, 43.4%, 45.9%, 45.4%. The best guys are generally in the mid to high 40's, so I would say very good.

I don't think you can consider Lebron the greatest player in Laker history. He might be the best player who ever played for the Lakers, but it's not the same thing.

I gotta say though, just pulling up his stats, I couldn't believe he's been on the Lakers for 5 years now.
COVID shutdowns completely altered the sense of time IMO.

5 years passed but many of us only lived like 3 years of life as far as doing stuff, goes.

There’s speculation that Dinwiddie and DFS will make their debuts for the Nets tomorrow night against the Clippers. And then Irving will make his Mavs debut Wednesday night against…the Clippers.

I think a handful of teams will be interested, at least in trying to get him for like 5 cents on the dollar.

It’s times like these that I’m reminded some Bucks insiders said Giannis wisely vetoed a trade for Kyrie back when he was still in Cleveland. I’d keep an eye on Dallas. Kidd is a believer.
Nailed it!

So I’ve thought about this for a bit and I’m starting to like the trade for Dallas. Why? Let me lay out the logic

Preface: odds are this doesn’t work and may actually blow up in their face

-having said that:

They had zero chance at going anywhere this year. None

Kyrie is a super talented player who, if he’s bought in for just a few months, can certainly shift the tide of power in the conference. He could also sink the ship, but who cares if you have no shot this year anyway , AND you have no commitment to him beyond this year.

So I like it in so much as it’s a high variance play. Gives you a much higher ceiling at the cost of a lower floor. But who cares how low the floor is when you’ve got no shot otherwise?

As far as two ball dominant guards not being a fit…we were told that about harden and Paul and that actually worked extremely well and could have resulted in a championship had Paul not gotten injured

They may have still gone to the Finals had they not kept relying on the three in G7. They literally shot themselves out of it.
