NBA Thread 2022-23 Season

Sorry Day2

Yeah, Is Westbrook out of the NBA after this season? I guess he could sign a cheap contract for some bad team but not sure he will.

I think everyone is pretty tired of him from fans, players, coaches. Bound to happen when a guard who relies on elite athleticism to drive and score loses a couple steps.

I’m sure he’ll do fine with his fashion, which is another reason for him to get the heck out of SLC.

Possibly. Very Allen Iverson like, if so.

He can’t shoot the 3, but i respect him because he plays hard.

Was a signal of bad luck to come for Zion.
Would have loved to see him healthy, but it was / is not sustainable at his weight and athletic style

They’ve pretty much destroyed what was the only watchable All Star game in pro sports. And for what? Why? Stupid changes.

Silver and his gimmicks are just the worst.
Did the gimmicks really ruin it? It seems like it basically just boils down to the players being scared to play actual basketball.

It will never happen because of the $ but they should just give the league a 10 day break and do away with all this nonsense. Nobody affiliated with the NBA wants to be there, sure they want the $ that some have tied into it but that's it. With the contracts that will be out there after the next TV deal they should just drop 10 games per year, no more back to backs and make contracts and post season awards tied into minimum games played etc.. The regular season has turned into a joke and fans keep lapping it up still.
I think players want to be there. They just don't want to play. It seems like a lot of them enjoy the hanging out part of it.

Remember when the NBA promoted Malone and Stockton as “good guys”?

Malone might be one of the worst people to ever play in the NBA and Stockton is a complete nut job.

Also, I can’t believe they had the All Star game in Utah, lol.
Eh, I mean, no reason not to rotate it around the league. Builds the fan base. Small market teams put a lot of dollars into the NBA too.

I’m not saying they “shouldn’t” rotate it, just saying I’m surprised they actually do.

Remember though, whenever the ultra wealthy engage in something like owning professional sports franchises, they always look to the organization to run with some socialist tendencies.

Looks like a bunch of players stayed up in Park City and had an awesome time. At least up in Park City. During the game though, a bunch of guys looked like they'd rather be anywhere else - specifically Jaylen Brown.

Jaylen could have opted out -Jalen Brunson was deserving IMO, and would have appreciated it.

From my personal perspective, the all star game was unwatchable well before Silver came in.
His changes have not helped though I will give you that, but the ASG as a true competitive game that players gave a care about has not existed this century. Some years they start to care in the last 6 minutes.

The only one that remains competitive is baseball, but it is hurt by the play 32 players evenly concept.

It’s always been a low intensity “show” as long as I remember, but the gimmicks have just made it worse.

I was ok with it just getting competitive at the end. That Iverson/Marbury lead comeback was a lot of fun, for example.

That Iverson/Marbury thing was 20 years ago, and was "somewhat isolated" even for that time which made it special.

There was a lot of bad non intense ASG basketball under Stern's watch.

Next year is Indy, and I was reading Milwaukee is in play for 25. What a run of cities!

I felt like the elam endings the last few years were pretty competitive, am I misremembering that? I seem to remember one year it was really good at the end. But, I am getting old.

I am going through some serious NBA withdrawal right now.

A couple of years ago was great. When Nick Nurse was coach I think. That's what I was hoping this game would be. Never happened. I have not been critical about the AS game but after that... yeah, a waste of time.

I was going to look at the stats and basically say well actually, scoring is at a similar level to where it was in the Bird/Magic/MJ era, which is the era boomers seem to think was the peak of basketball. And before this year, that would've been the case. The average team the last few years was around 111/112 points per game; in the 80's we peaked around 111 points per game. Very similar. But this year, we're up to 114.3 points per game, which is the most since the 60s. (In 1962, the league averaged 118.8 points per game and shot 42.6% from the field; the average team took 20 more shots per game than now. Wilt Chamberlain was amazing, don't get me wrong guys, but you can't average 30 rebounds a game unless teams are shooting, and missing, a lot of shots)

The absolute #1 issue the league has is making sure the star players play as often as they can. All the other stuff, to me at least, is whatever. The in season tournaments could be cool. (Or it could suck!) I'm a soccer fan, they have multiple competitions going on, in college basketball you have your early season tournaments, conference tournaments, etc. But it sucks for the league if you have star players just sitting games out to rest. I understand where teams are coming from. But it sucks.

I remember in the 21 season, the finals were pushed out to July because the season started later; i thought maybe something like that could help. Extend the length of the season, same number of games over a little bit longer period of time.

Re the Bird/Magic/MJ era, the D played wasn’t nearly as good as it is now and less threes. Also, not nearly the depth of talent as it is now.

I wish they could extend the season but the NBA has looked into the calendar before and they eyeballs aren’t there once they push into the summer anymore. And it’s not just the nba. You don’t want to be airing in July.

Load management thing is huge and the owners will get something in the new CBA to help offset that and tie some component of pay to games.

Silver was a good respite after Stern went overboard, but there is no way these guys would be taking off this much time if Stern was still commish.

And if the rumors are (and have been) true, he’s also not going super hard on rehab. And hasn’t in the past.

If you pay for a new arena, you’ll get the all star game.

You’ll also get the TNT guys making fun of your city.
