OC Rumors

Dino is most likely A a procrastinator and B this isnt exactly a great gig given his situation.
I would elevate Lynch. Bring in a good QB position coach and id call my own plays vs hiring a retread.
The other call is bring in a stud and give them a nice guarantee.
Every time I see someone accuse someone else of being a procrastinator because something didn’t happen on some imaginary schedule, it always makes me defensive. I typically want to respond right away, but then I put it off for days or weeks.

Having a class on NIL is great but without local support it doesn't matter. We need to hope for congress to even the play
accusations with limited knowledge = lame
Is most likely. I didn't say he is. However we do know his use of multiple TOs during crucial in game decisions probably has nothing to do with procrastination.

This is a pecking order thing. Much like recruiting - not a whole lot can change it. Money perhaps.
It's all money. When you can throw cash around - and importantly, not care if you have to throw more cash after the wasted cash in a couple years - you don't have to spend much time negotiating on contracts. Just throw money and get it done. Fundamental difference between public and private schools IMO.

It's enough of a pattern on and off the field that I think it's safe to say that he is often very indecisive with big decisions.

he is quick in press Con and is obvioulsy an intelligent guy i just think that he freezes up in games which might be one of the reasons he only lasted a few games as an OC

Can I like this 1000%. Been down that road once before and we know how that turned out. Repeating the same thing over and over again expecting a different results is the definition of insanity.
Well, we did win 10 games one of the years he was OC. But I agree that I do not want him as our OC.

The chancellor and the BOT do.

While the opinion and behavior (i.e. attending games) of fans might be taken into account, these are the ultimate decision makers.
I care too, I want the kids to graduate, etc. my point is the sport is rapidly changing and not for the better IMO. The definition of a clean program is evolving where to what we think is important will not be the norm. I’ve found this to disheartening and I’m finding my enthusiasm for the sport dwindling rapidly. I believe at some point Syracuse and other like minded programs will have to decide how committed it wants to be to be in order to stay competitive.

Let's talk about the OC and what we are looking for a bit more.

What do we definitely know?

John Wildhack is currently involved in this.

He says he wants someone with a background developing QBs.

"We’ve talked about somebody who’s worked and developed quarterbacks," Wildhack said, emphasizing that it's Babers who will make all staff changes. "I think that’s important."

We also know SU isn't going to pay top dollar for this hire and it can't be a super attractive job for an OC because

1) Dino is not locked into a long term contract and if he gets canned, all his assistants locked get canned as well
2) An OC known for developing QBs and the passing game is going to check the cupboard and see how well stock Syracuse is with QBs, WRs and OL. They probably aren't going to be thrilled with what they find in the cupboard.

So Josh Gattis is not going to be coming here as a lateral move from Michigan. It is unlikely any well respected OC from an established program is going to come here.

It is also, I think, unlikely we get a young, promising offensive mind from a lower level program as the new OC. I think John wants someone who has successfully developed a number of QBs at the P5 level.

I am guessing it will be a veteran coach who has been around and has a lot of experience. He probably is going to be a coach who was on a staff where the HC was recently fired and the staff let go. I don't expect Sowder is coming. He doesn't have the track record yet that I think John is looking for, and even if we reached out to him, I don't think he would be super interested.

I don't see the new coach bringing in a new system. He is being brought in specifically to fix the passing game and develop QBs.

Robert Anae would be a nice hire. Agree Rod Smith would be an interesting choice. Mike Bobo would be a good choice. Mike Sanford would not be bad.

I believe all of the above are currently unemployed and ready to go. Most are near the end of their career and a good paying P5 job offer should be enough to get them locked in.

Shane Montgomery of UB also looks promising. He would be making a lateral move but I am sure would make a lot more money at Syracuse.

Whoever it is, I hope it happens by the end of the weekend. We have a bunch of recruits that I am sure would like to know who the OC is they would be playing under.

Good post , though as tough as it has been I don’t believe UB to SU is a lateral move despite a couple real good years at Buffalo ( not this year)

Nice framing...agree with the thinking.

John Wildhack being involved in the hire puts the success of the hire on him even more.

He kept Dino.
He is making himself part of the process to hire an OC and not just the HC decision.

This becomes part of his ledger to evaluate.

I agree with you, less art, more science. Whatever functionality issues we had with the last OC need to go away. Not always going to call the right plays, but they need to be called in a timely manner, etc...

What should worry us more, Dino picking another OC or an admin from ESPN? Oy vey!

Great post Tom i agree it will be an older more seasoned guy who doesnt need to move kids and upset the home front.

Good summary Tom.

I too think it will be a veteran coach who is OK with a sword hanging over the head of the whole staff in exchange for a few more years of income at the end of his career. A dark horse would be someone who also had past association with SU.

I think a young guy from a lower level might also be willing to roll the dice on the same risk in exchange for having "P5 OC" on his resume. However, I think this scenario is less likely.

My fear is that, in the end, it will be a journeyman retread who is taking less of a risk on us than we are on him. Hope I'm wrong.

The concern with not brining in a new system is that the current one even before this years emphasis on running has been figured out by D coordinators. In DBs words it’s Red and Rotten.
I agree that is going to be difficult to get an OC under the current circumstances. However if the university provided a two year contract around $1 million a year you may get better choices.
It all depends on what the university wants. If it is important to try to retain DB and give him the best chance to be successful they will pay the money. If they kept DB because of the buy out and merely need to get through next season regardless of success then they will not spend the money.
I feel the hire will really tell if the university wants to retain DB after 22 or not.
