Meanwhile a board darling that had we hired would’ve turned us around and had us as a top 20 team….

Had a tough loss today. The team they played had a SR PG that dominated them

Might have helped if St Ricky didn't move a home game to Long Guyland.

Yup, two of the top names on the list to replace JAB are struggling this season. Pitino, 14-12, but 6-9 in conference and Ed Cooley, 8-17 with only one conference win.

I said this in another thread, but there is no magic wand. For all this team is up against, Red has done ok for a first year coach. If we win 20+, I'll say he's done better than ok.

I didn't want Pitino the two I wanted are having different results...

Sean Miller was my first choice and he is not doing well 13-12 at Xavier I don't know if he has had major injuries or not but that is a big disappointment compared to last year.

Shaka Smart was my second choice and well he is having an outstanding season so far and a lock for the tournament.

But but why didn’t we go after Pitino? Red is doing such a terrible job and Pitino is the savior. Funny how he says “first year coaches don’t win”. But man he threw them under the bus and then ran them over lol
Pitino has brought three different teams to the final 4 and won 2 championships. He has a proven track record. Also St John’s has been garbage this century. Not exactly apples to apples.

95% of the posts on this board about making Pitino the next SU coach were tongue-in-cheek.

Somewhere in the archives, there are posts of me singing praises of both those guys, but I don't think realistically that Syracuse would pay them what they would command. Plus, Miller has some baggage and Shaka's on court record has had some ups and downs. However, if I was starting a program from the ground floor, Shaka might be at the top of my list.

St. John’s had a better record than us the past two seasons. Rick showed everyone the door, got new players and they still stink. It’s almost like the first year is hard for everyone.

I didn’t want Slick Rick either so it’s no skin off my back. Last thing I’d want is another coach in their 70’s after JB. I’m just pointing out Ricks track record as a head coach with multiple teams vs. Red.

I'd take Shakas top Assistant Nevada Smith. Tempo and offensive specialists. We need to think outside the box like we did HCFB.

It is hard, but there have also been some successes recently, like Tommy Lloyd, Jerome Tang, maybe Grant McCasland ... but there have been some successes at times. Red was always getting a pass from me this season. How he responds is going to go a long way towards future success.

I looked at BBref for some context that people should consider:

1) There are 65 first year coaches this season (not necessarily their first team, but first year with a team).
Red ranks 19th in win% - which is really good considering that a few of the guys ahead of him are either established good coaches with a new team (Beard, Will Wade, McCasland, Kim English, etc.) or lower mid major schools.

2) I count 35 rookie head coaches this season and only 14 have a winning record right now. Red is one of them and is currently 7th in W%.

Also, of those 35, Red is 1 of 2 rookie head coaches of a P6 team this season. The other being Josh Eilert at WV who is a last minute stand in. I think a rookie taking over a P6 school is a bit of a rarity, but the learning curve could be reduced due to the infrastructure at a big established program (e.g., Scheyer at Duke) versus a small lower D1 school running practices in a barn.
I think Kim English is doing a pretty good job at Providence considering he's taking over a program that got blowed up with Cooley going to GTown and taking some players with him.

I don’t think Rick had anything to do with the deal with UBS Arena; St Johns has been playing games there for 3 years.

Yes Xavier has been ravaged with injuries. They were excellent last year.

lol. Wow, impressive.
Close your eyes. Now imagine. Rick Pitino. And Kadari. And the dome is filled. And a (non-zone) defense that's relentless. And multi-year players that are well-coached and never complain to the officials or spend their time on the bench arguing or moping. And you have an offense that is faster than anything you have seen on the hardwood and never playing 4 on 5.

(and this post getting nuked)

When I saw Rick's press conference on ESPN when Rick was complaining about his players not listening to him and not being coachable I kept thinking about the similarities to our team.

I'm not entirely sure it is the current generation of players that are not coachable due to AAU, being told how great they are etc. or just St. J & Syracuse getting a bad group of players that won't listen to coaching.

Maybe college basketball is becoming like the NBA where coaches seem to be responsible for determining playing time but not much else.
