St. John’s had a better record than us the past two seasons. Rick showed everyone the door, got new players and they still stink. It’s almost like the first year is hard for everyone.
It is hard, but there have also been some successes recently, like Tommy Lloyd, Jerome Tang, maybe Grant McCasland ... but there have been some successes at times. Red was always getting a pass from me this season. How he responds is going to go a long way towards future success.
I looked at BBref for some context that people should consider:
1) There are 65 first year coaches this season (not necessarily their first team, but first year with a team).
Red ranks 19th in win% - which is really good considering that a few of the guys ahead of him are either established good coaches with a new team (Beard, Will Wade, McCasland, Kim English, etc.) or lower mid major schools.
2) I count 35 rookie head coaches this season and only 14 have a winning record right now. Red is one of them and is currently 7th in W%.
Also, of those 35, Red is 1 of 2 rookie head coaches of a P6 team this season. The other being Josh Eilert at WV who is a last minute stand in. I think a rookie taking over a P6 school is a bit of a rarity, but the learning curve could be reduced due to the infrastructure at a big established program (e.g., Scheyer at Duke) versus a small lower D1 school running practices in a barn.
I think Kim English is doing a pretty good job at Providence considering he's taking over a program that got blowed up with Cooley going to GTown and taking some players with him.
