The problem is not the talent

None of it was due to any effort on the schools part.It DID just happen for them.I guess not turning down the offer of a free stadium was a huge and very tough decision for them.Luckily they went the right way on that one. What did THEY do to build on that bit of LUCK?

As I said earlier, I do not dispute the lack of commitment by the school to build on that momentum. I happen to have a close family member who was an alum and involved with the AD as well as local politics behind the scenes. To say that the state just gifted the dome to an unsuspecting University is to overly simplify how the Dome came to be. There was a lot of behind the scenes effort that the public never hears about. You're unwilling to give credit for hiring Mac but ready to assign blame for other decisions that get made. Either way believe what you want about ancient history but we can agree that the commitment to winning has been lacking since.

It also doesn't help when your head coach's primary aspiration is to shoot for "under the radar types" in recruiting. That's like a manager saying my hiring philosophy is to look for talent that nobody else really wants and hope I get a hit more time then I strike out. This is craziness. We need a HC that recruits the best possible talent he can find irrespective of who else he's competing with. This poor red headed stepchild routine has grown cold. Before anyone says "but we can't recruit against the big boys", I acknowledge the fact that we have had problems historically reeling in the 4 and 5 stars when they have offers from higher profile programs but I submit that is more about our long running lack of success on the field than anything else. The University needs to do the same and go out and spend the money to get a big time staff to right this ship once and for all and make us a perennial top 25 program. There is absolutely no reason why we can't get there if the right pieces are put in place.
Totally agree- when Louisville hired Charlie Strong he brought stud recruits with him instantly. If someone can explain to me why this doesn't happen here I'd like to hear it.

My god where the did I say we have top 25 talent. I said we could use more talent of course. Our talent is not top 25 but it is not Wake forest. Boston College, Pittsburgh have close to the same level of talent and they have put up way better offensive numbers.
Stop trying to make it sound I am saying we have top 25 talent we have 7-5 talent and this coaching staff is doing a terrible job this year.
West,Ishmael,Lewis, Tyson-Gulley, Adonis-Moore, Philips are decent players I get Long is a tFr but with Hunt we weren't doing anything.
I realize we could use more talent i don't expect 9-3 but this team is 3-6 and 1-4 at home looks horrible. Stop Trying to move the goalposts on what I am saying. We need better talent of course but this staff is not going to turn it around. The HC had a horrible interview and all I want is for him to replace the bad offensive coaches.

Who's moving the goalposts? You are. You're all over the place. The title of YOUR thread is 'The problem is not the talent'. Then you say we could use more talent (of course), then you say we don't have top 25 talent, then you say BC and Pitt is close to us, (like that's good) then you list 7 players, yes just 7 players that are decent, not great but decent then talk about 9-3 talent which I wish we did. This just in...The problem IS our talent along with the coaches who aren't recruiting it.

Papa John $ and thus investment in facilities. Fan support. Willingness to shell out for coaches. That's really all there is to it, why is it so hard to understand?

For that to happen here, you need to (1) get a Charlie Strong on campus, and (2) hope that he is able to sell our program after recruits see the place.

I don't think we have the will to make (1) happen. If it did, then (2) just got a lot easier with the IPF. The final step is to convince recruits that it's in their interest to play in front of a crowd that is smaller than at every other place they are considering, and without the same level of fan zeal surrounding the program.

So how are we going to make this happen at SU?

Here's the deal though. West made other great plays when they had to be made. But even great talent doesn't make every play.

Can't argue.

I just thought he should have made that play.
