This is why you play Shrader…

Well TD inflated by Alford 73 yarder

Doesn't matter how far ball travels in air, all that matters is six points
Uh... I disagree.

Shrader getting a passing TD and a bunch of passing yards from Tucker turning a simple screen pass into a monster play is not the same as DeVito getting a passing TD and a bunch of yards by hitting Alford in stride deep.

Except you can see those handoffs come a mile away with Tommy. Shrader did a much better job with misdirection of who had the ball, him or Tucker.
Cuselegacy weighed in. Game, set, match. There are a lot of posters, me include, that continually express their opinion between GS and TD. Cuselegacy and llanz always seem objective and both see that GS gives us a better chance to win at this point. As fans that is what we should all want regardless of our personal preference at qb.

GS was far from perfect but he does something’s that makes the team better and it allowed us to win.
Will teams stack the box going forward? Probably. So it will be on the coaches and GS to make the adjustments.
just really excited for the win.

If GS can’t hit a wide open Alford, yeah it matters. I think he might with more time. But the pass TD had was *perfect*
How many wide open guys has TD missed? A lot

We took one shot down field with Shrader and he missed ... Y'all should be used to seeing a miss with TD

He hits one every 6-7 attempts

Edit:. TD is the one with the rep as the gunslinger, not Shrader. Ain't no gunslinging going on, on the hill since TD took over

With these WRs Tommy is good for 1-2 a game. Other that that he offers very little. You can’t play a home run hitter with a .125 batting average. If we had better WRs then it is a different story as he is a .250 hitter.

He also got lit up a couple times trying to keep it himself. Especially in the second half when they knew we weren’t passing
Ok. And Tucker got stopped for a loss or no gain a few times too. Is your argument that he wasn't effective because he didn't gain yards on every single play? He averaged 3.3 yards per carry when you factor in the losses he took on the bad snaps. That's solid. Nobody is saying the guy is Lamar Jackson.

Are you serious? Sure, Tucker was the star and will be our best player all year, but please tell me you're not so blind that you couldn't see that the way the defense had to account for the possibility of Shrader keeping the ball opened up some more room for Tucker. And you had to see the plays where he broke a tackle or made a guy miss to keep us on schedule or pick up a first down.
Plus, the OL played well in the run game.

Lost in all of this is Taj Harris. With the QB change, his catches and opportunities diminished considerably. I hope he can keep his head on and keep working for the team.
Not sure. In the fourth quarter his blocking was horrible. If he’s not going to block in this offense pull him.

The final play before the FG to win is a perfect example you play Shrader over Devito.

On 3rd and 13 Shrader guts out a run up the middle that could have been a loss to gain 7 and sets up an easy 35 yard field goal. From past experience, Devito would have run out of bounds to the right looking downfield taking a 6 yard loss and give us a 48-49 yard fg from the right hash that we probably miss.

Sometimes you just have to make a good play instead of waiting for a great play and most likely making a bad play.

Shrader isn't great, but the play calling is horrific. When Gilbert was OC at UT, one the biggest complaints about him were a complete lack of diversity in play calling, zero sophistication or creativity in the passing game and non-strategic play calling... i.e. he doesn't seem to call one play to set up another instead if a play works he just calls it over and over again well past the point of it working, even if the other team is sitting not that play.

This is what we saw in the 2nd half... Liberty was sitting on the base RPO that we were running and Gilbert called it over and over and over and over again. What we should have done in the 2nd half is a crap ton of play action and screen passes. Shrader can't hit the deep, but he seems to have no problem with the intermediate/short passes. The main issue is that those plays don't seem to be a part of this offense. Again last night, where was the TE in the passing game? Where were the slants? The short hitches where the WR just sits where the LB has vacated to go stop the run? Where were the WR screens we saw earlier in the year? At one point, the announcer stated that Babers is a "screen-game guy" and I almost spit out my drink because in my 5 years of watching Babers-ball we have barely used the screen.

I did see a few positives... we ran two or three screens to Tucker and they went for decent yardage. We stopped throwing the dumb deep side line pass to Harris which almost next works.

There is talent on this squad... it's not clear that the we have the offensive coaching staff to really do anything with it.

Our refusal to play action pass is baffling to me.

He has 92 rush / catch in four games. 23 a game. He is our work horse. 23 is manageable. RBs used to carry 20+ times a game all the time. It's old school.

It's only really in the last 25 years have teams gone platoon at the position
We haven't traditionally had our main guy carry that much, though. We usually have a second guy lighten the load a bit. Joe Morris carried it over 200 times in 2 of his 4 years. Owens did once but it still ended up being less than 20 carries per game. McPherson actualy came close once. Mungro averaged 20 his senior year. Reyes did as a junior. Rhodes and Brinkley were just shy as seniors. Carter came close his junior and senior year. Bailey did it once. Jerome Smith came close once.

It's pretty rare for one of our RB to average over 20 carries a game. 23 carries per game would set the single season carry record for us.

I included catches in the 23.

I’m not confident at all GS can make that throw. Tommy has a highlight reel filled with them.

Tommy is over.

If there’s a controversy, it’s Garrett or Jabobian.

We already know what Tommy is. Great arm, but we won’t move the ball or score or win.
I don't get the love for Morgan. I thought he had slow feet in the pocket and he hasn't done enough to legitimately think so highly of him. Either of the other young guys could be better. We don't know if any of them have the goods. Can we wait until we have something tangible to base these opinions on?

I included catches in the 23.
I noticed that after I looked everything up. I didn't want to go back and see if that changed anything. I suspect it wouldn't change much. Traditionally, we haven't thrown much to RBs. I'm guessing it amounts to less than one touch per game for most guys that I listed.

Highlight reel over four years that is about ten plays long ... And our record is what it is with him being the field general
2-1 with a functional OL

The point was that TD has the arm for that throw and has done it a lot in his career. GS does a lot of other things well, but not that throw.

I think there are a lot of posters that will need to revaluate their positions on TD by the end of the season

Highlight reel throws don’t get you to bowl games, 6 wins do. Duck Dynasty Dungey got the win.
You missed the point. It’s about who can make a throw like that when you need it. I’m not confident GS can. FSU is going to have 9 guys in the box.

How do we win that game without a better passing game?

Also “Duck Dynasty Dungey” is very good

Oh there is no way that GS makes the throw, I agree. But he showed there is another way to win so we don’t need to make highlight throws to bail us out of being in 3rd and never going to happen.

Im not opposed to Devito coming in to spell Shrader or to keep the defense honest I just think if we keep starting Devito against tough competition (Liberty/Rutgers/ACC vs Ohio/Albany) we shouldn’t be surprised when we see the same results.
