OrangeXtreme --THANK YOU for summarizing the press conference. I'm at a client meeting in Denver, and couldn't watch the presser, but I appreciate that I can follow along on my phone reading your summary.

Thanks for your efforts--much appreciated!

Boeheim reiterates that Fab Melo had a C- when he petitioned a professor for a grade change. Not an , as some have said.

Boeheim said that hundreds of grade changes are given out after a course ends. Boeheim was issued one when he was a student, he said.

Boeheim: "I did a 17-page paper on the American Revolution in one night. ... I had 32 quotations."

Boeheim said it was clear to him that Melo could do this paper.

Boeheim: "I really wasn't concerned about him writing his own work because it was his life story."

Boeheim on Kissel/Melo's paper edits: "You hire people, you work with people. You have to have trust in those people."

Boeheim remembers Melo's paper going through, professor approved it, College of Arts and Sciences didn't process it Fri. before a Sat. game.

I hope you get to see a replay. He's hitting it out of the park.

Boeheim on drug policy: "No one knew that if you had a policy and didn't follow it step by step that it was an NCAA violation."

Boeheim: "We had nobody test positive for anything other than one substance (marijuana)."

Boeheim said he didn't call parents of positive testers out of trust to them. Told first-time offenders he'd call parents on 2nd positive.

Boeheim said AD Daryl Gross knew about him not calling parents. Maintains that the call "wouldn't have been productive."

Boeheim does take responsibility for NCAA violation of not calling parents, but says he just didn't know about policy rule.

Boeheim: "When you look at the facts in the case, to me, everything is serious, there is no excuse, but academics is most important area."

Boeheim on ex-academic adviser Terry McDonald being pushed out: "That is the most fallacious statement that I have ever heard from anyone."

Boeheim: "I've never gotten anybody fired. I've never fired anybody, in my area or any other area."

Boeheim: "I've been told that I intimidate people. I don't try to." Says his press-conference chiding is "an act."

Boeheim on NC State presser: "I wanted to do the press conference and limit it, obviously to basketball."

Boeheim said he still wanted to do presser, but hadn't read NCAA report before game.

Boeheim: I didn't want to send out Hopkins after NC State game. I also didn't want to keep saying no comment.

Boeheim: "Again, if you believe that I make all the decisions here, you're under some delusion. I hope I've tried to dispel that today."

Boeheim said he had conversations with Syverud about retirement before report came out.

Boeheim: "I didn't really want to have a discussion (about retirement) until we got through this point in our history."

Boeheim: some people told me not to come here. Someone told people not to hire me here.

Boeheim: I don't care about people's opinions. It's a great country. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

Going after Mike and Donna, nice

I'm curious what he has an issue with them about their reportage...seems they are the best journalists at the Post Standard...maybe he has an issue with their reporting on our scholarships issue and whether we'd be able to bring in Bryant?

Boeheim doesn't think there's an overall problem with collegiate athletics re: academics.

Boeheim says the scale of "big-time" collegiate athletics has grown, but system and perception hasn't changed.

Boeheim confirms that he will appeal the nine-game ACC suspension.

Boeheim: "We will appeal, but it won't work, that I could coach in practice and get them ready for the games."

Boeheim: "We had eight players on our team on scholarship when we won the national championship."

Boeheim said he won't accept payment during suspension. Will instead donate that money locally. "I wouldn't feel right" accepting it.

I'm sure his hatred, as he said for Mike, has long been before that.

Just a few personal observations:
  • Like the teams he coaches, JB is at his best when given a chance to prepare.
  • I don't get the whole "parent notification" thing. With FERPA regulations, I wasn't allowed to be told anything about either of my children's college experience (especially medical info, that I assume would include drug testing, which would also be covered under HIPPA).
  • I really believe Hop is the right person to take over for JB when he steps down.

Boeheim said he doesn't know how many wins were vacated. Says NCAA "hasn't been consistent in enforcing that, obviously."

Boeheim on importance of career wins: "It isn't to me. ... It's nice, but it isn't what I'm going to be thinking about near the end."
