If the program falters even more than what we’re seeing it’s because they made the wrong hire plain and simple. Not because the program or brand is permanently damaged goods. And it’s hard to do worse than a losing season.
Maryland has rebounded from Gary Williams.
Maryland sucked at the end with Williams.

Syracuse will rebound from Jim Boeheim.
These 6 years don’t mean we will lose suck forever or the brand is damaged.
Syracuse fans care about the program we will be fine.
All the frustration is we are stuck in the mud. It will be fine post JB as long as the right guy is hired.

Roy Williams was at Kansas for 15 years.
Had his own legacy was going to be a HOFer then Carolina came calling with it’s godfather offer and he went home.

Hop could be at Washington for 10 more years and then Syracuse could coming calling and then we will see.
I don’t see any scenario Hopkins is replacing JB that bridge is done.
Well I will say this JB better not be here for another 10 years. He’s a great coach but what is he already 74 we don’t need an 80 to 84-year-old coach. Sometimes you know he kind of reminds me of the Florida State coach Bowden or coach paterno that just would not retire even though results were getting worse and worse and believe me I hope I’m wrong plus Boeheim needs to adapt a little bit! I am sure If he wanted we can get some big money assistant coaches in there. I mean we make pretty much more money than any other basketball program in the country besides maybe Kentucky and North Carolina and maybe Duke so it’s not like we can’t afford it! these guys we got now are just not cutting it and JB included. JB Is infamous for being stubborn but like I said he needs to adapt to the game today or just even realize that we’re not getting the players we used to or just maximize the potential by getting a hot shot recruiter and a good x & O guy to help out and that will make a world of difference in my opinion

If JB announces his retirement in the summer how isn’t his successor a current assistant?
That is what I would put money on happening.
Well JB loves the school and wants the best for this program so I would assume he wouldn’t do that so he would give us a good amount of time to find the right guy for this program. IMO We can do better than any assistant that’s on our staff right now!

I think Cuse will pay him $6 million per year to return home.

You don’t know what you’re talking about.
All of it, or something specific?

I don’t think he will do that. I think he will announce his retirement in the offseason.
It’s what a lot of legends have done.
Jim Calhoun, Dean Smith, Gene Keady.

JB loves SU but I think he will retire late.

That’s all in fine when you announce it but at least give the A.D. some notice so we can try to find a replacement, a suitable replacement.

I agree. The league switch has had a big effect on our program, and I do not think it has been for the better. It is simply not as fun to watch, as you said. Something about being the big dog (or 1 of 2 or 3) in the awesome Big East compared to top half (at best?) in a conference that you do not care anything about.
Somebody posted thatSU didn’t belong in the ACC. He was eviscerated.

I have been following Syracuse sports for 45 years. It isn't as much fun anymore. The league switch. Our teams not being as good as we hoped. For years, I would say each week that I am going to the casino to play poker on Saturday and week after week, I stay home and watch the football team. I can't speak for others, but this week, i am playing poker. Might miss Friday nights hoop game as well. 45 years.

You playing in the 100K guaranteed tourney at Turning Stone?

and they are dumping a 100 million into it. This entire thread is a troll job by people who’ve switched alliances since Hopkins left. I’m here to call that out. We stink, but it can be fixed.
God speed young man

We have the facilities, revenue and exposure. It’s not like we’re hoping for a miracle. We just need Boeheim to leave behind a non-dumpster fire roster and have Wildhack nail the next hire.
...

Sorta. But things change quickly in the wrong direction, too. In terms of facilities, the Melo Center's gonna be 15 years old and dated by the time Boeheim leaves. Will his friends and other boosters be lining up to invest in the program for the new coach? Will revenue dip as the team continues this level of play? Relative exposure? (ESPN's still treating us pretty well, we've got UNC in a good time slot in February, but for how long will be continue to be treated like a top-tier program?)

It might take a quasi miracle after a couple more NITs and further degradation of the talent level.

Without reading everything I'll just say that I think Red will end up being our next head coach. What thta means for the program i'm not sure. I like Red. He's pretty well respected and has connections in the city and elsewhere. It comes down mostly to talent and ability of the players.

2 years as a HS coach
3 years at Va Tech
9 years at Syracuse (inc the last 4 as Associate HC).

He'll be a HC someday.

You realize they have been to the tournament a total of 17 times and been to the sweet 16 nine times and that’s as far as they’ve got. If it was such a great job maybe someone would have won there over the past 100 years. I’m sorry that’s laughable and I don’t care what anyone thinks.

That was Mark Few's resume until recently, too. Doesn't make either one a bad coach or a bad program.

OK, play Boeheim for a day.

What is the key to reversing this last 5+ year slide?

Sanctions have been over for a couple years now.

Recruiting is still not close to what it used to be.

Boeheim has become like Arsene Wenger in his last years at Arsenal - he fell in love with one part of the game, but kept forgetting to build a whole team, like he used to do. Arsenal fell in love with flair players, and forgot about having guys who can fight and do the dirty work to neutralize the other team. '
Our gimmick defense sucks if (1) you can't / don't run off of turnovers to create easy offense, and (2) the guards can't cut off the driving lanes, and (3) you don't have a couple guys who can guard the rim and defend low post players on the other team.

We haven't had any of those things for several years now.

What's the fix? It's sure not recruiting. And when was the last time we saw a player get better at SU? It's been freaking years. Honestly, what is going to get better, when Boeheim basically throws in the towel on this year in game 7. "We're just not a good team." HELLO?? No kidding! But does that motivate the players? Does it help when your son is still playing 35 minutes a game when he's having a terrible game?

The really hard part about all of this is that JB thinks he is the guy to get this thing "right back on track". We had 2 of our best teams at the start of this decade, and then the damn NCAA came along. I get that.

But he has not managed the process well at all. Poor roster construction, giving out scholarships to clearly the wrong guys. He lost his edge in talent evaluation, which he used to be great at. And he started favoring Gerry over Mike while Mike was still here, especially with some of the decisions of who to put on the road. I guess Boeheim needed Mike more running practices, and figured Gerry could do well enough as the lead recruiter. Us not getting some of our targets was not just an inability of McNamara or Boeheim to close, it was the head coach not agreeing with an assistant's recommendation.

Syracuse is a better job than Washington. However, don't sell Washington short -- it's a school that has always been able to recruit well.

Since 2006 (14 Drafts), the University of Washington has had:
10 First Round Draft Picks
5 Lottery Picks

In that same period Syracuse has had 10 First Rounders, and 4 Lottery Picks.

The above is also quite an indictment of their prior coach.

I hope our next head coach isn't on our bench...I fear he is but I hope not.

our current head coach might as well not be on the bench.

Throw the bank at Matt Painter... Randy Bennett would at least bring a good scheme and Xs/Os. Give him money to hire a big time recruiter and I think he would do well at Cuse. Outside the box hire would be Tommie Lloyd from Gonzaga. Big time recruiter overseas. Long shots are Buzz, Few, etc. Honestly, looking more at it, its tough to even say. Not a ton of great possible candidates. But a change ABSOLUTELY needs to be made after this year.

Matt Painter's face is too big.

A name to consider is Wojo at Marquette. He has done a good job with that program. He also has a lot of contacts on the East coast And is respected. Just a thought.
