Clean House

I wasn’t upset about this loss. This was to be expected. I won money by betting we’d lose by 25. I expected us to lose by over 30 so that was nice.
We actually shot 50% against Tennessee. That’s an accomplishment.

Red looks so much worse in comparison to Fran. Also considering so many teams can go from bad to good within a year.

He definitely hasn’t helped himself with his lineups and subs. He’s literally a JB disciple, what did you expect.

Red is basically the guy who has to take the fall after the legend leaves. Happens all the time. The question is how long does he get to bridge the gap?

We could go the football route and hire the best recruiter in the country whomever that is at the time. We could also get splashy with an NBA coach. Maybe we lure a big time coach out of retirement.

Whatever the answer is I wouldn’t want to be in JW shoes. He’s darned if he fires him too early and darned if he fires him too late.

Clemson lost a ton and are about to take down UK. We just need a competent coach in this week ACC and we'll be OK.

Outside of PG I don't think this roster is that bad and I'm not even sure the options at PG that don't play aren't servicable.
Our roster is the same as the previous decade. We have some nice pieces but a gapping hole in that derails the season before it even starts. It blows my mind we hired within. If JW didn’t get Fran I’d say he should be bounced with Red.

People need to watch the last ten minutes of Barne’s press conference last night and hear what he thinks of Autry. That’s all I’m going to say.
How did expect Barnes to answer the question? It was a softball from Mike of course Barnes is gonna be nice

His highest compliment was that we guarded them better than anyone else all year even tho they scored 96 and it was their 2nd most efficient offensive game all year.

Tennessees offensive efficiency last night was 136.8 - it was 114.6 against Louisville and 105.8 against UVA. Tennessee only had 1 game where they have been better on offense this year than they were last night - it was against Austin Peay.

Barnes has been around a long time , you can’t be shocked that he tried to compliment Red

What's he going to say? Red sucks at coaching? Of course he says something positive and he needs time.

Look, I don't know if Red can do the job. I'm not a basketball coach. But, so far, watching on tv, it looks like I'm watching bad coaching. Maybe he turns it around. I'm still rooting for him because I love Red, but we now have samples from two different teams, and all I'm saying is my leash is a lot shorter now.

I’ve never been more confident a coach ain’t it for Cuse than I am with Red tbh. Have to keep him around one more with the class coming in though. If he doesn’t make the tourney next year, he’s outta here
If you keep him, you gotta get rid of the assistants except for Straughn. Bring someone in that has solid bench experience with X's and O's. Red has no clue most of the time what's going and his lineups show this. How in the hell does Choppa not start and Carlos continues to play. If this team had the ballz and guts of Choppa we would be A LOT better.

Every coach who puts out teams like ours is every other coach's best friend. If I was Barnes I'd be pushing for Red to get an extension, one less program he ever has to worry about.

A third year may kill whats left of this program. To Red’s defense, there was hardly anything left of the program when JB left.
Sorry to say this, but I think the program is already as dead as it is going to get. Look at the last 10 years.

Kids in college and high school are too young to know Syracuse as Syracuse. They have only seen an irrelevant program.

Kids want to play in the NCAAT. We cannot offer that right now.

That's assuming they've seen us.

Our inability to secure a high level PG to fill in for Mintz was really disappointing but not our biggest issue. The biggest problem is Red's decision to go with a guy at pg who shouldn't spend any time on the court (other than with the walk ons). Carlos creates close to NOTHING. To say he's our only ball handler is so stupid. All he does is dribble around and then pass it around the perimeter. Yeah, he had a couple drives where he dished off to Bell for a 3 so that was good but he does so little.

Then on defense, there was one Tennessee possession where he just moved aside and allowed an offensive player an open drive to the basket - this happened TWICE on one possession. He literally moved out of the way. It was so frustrating to watch. That's about when I stopped watching.

Can't believe I'm saying this but even Symir Torrence would be better as the starting pg. It's so sad THIS is where we are.

Howard Washington was better.

I live about five hours away - but in the last decade I’ve gone from having season tickets, to buying 2-3 games a year and watching the rest on TV, to barely watching on TV anymore (and often flipping off pretty quickly when I do watch).

No idea how many fans are in a similar situation, but there’s two ways for the school to look at it if this season continues to go sideways. One is that the fans who are going to bail already have, so giving Red one more year doesn’t have a huge financial downside. The other is that the longer you go with a disengaged fanbase, the more likely it becomes that they never return (or take an incredibly long time to do so) - so change is needed immediately.

Based on past performance, where the school let football degrade to a point that getting back to “not terrible” has taken at least two decades - my guess is Red will get another year and I won’t even realize when games are on next season. Hopefully with the new administration involved, I am proven wrong.

Frank Howard would be a night-and-day upgrade... I can't believe I just typed that.
I feel bad for Carlos, Red is embarrassing him at this point. I say that sincerely, I haven't said much about him because he does seem like one of the few actually trying out there, maybe Eddie, but Eddie can't move like at all. He moves worse than DaJuan Coleman ever did with some of the worst potato knees ever.

Spending all that money on a center who isn't an All Star was a mistake.

I'm curious on how some of the players around his price range and position are performing.

I cant get on the fire Red bandwagon.

I thought he did a fine job (B+) last season with a flawed squad. This season is really, really bad so far, but look at the roster. Nobody could coach these guys to Ws over quality opponents.

Let's look at the team:

Lampkin - truthfully this Board has over-rated the kid. He is not on the same level as Brown. He has the big body and some skills, but he is slow and not athletic enough.

Carlos - he was the #1 portal mistake. He would be fine as a backup PG getting about 10 MPG. As a starter forgetaboutit !!!

Taylor - He is almost perfect every game - all zeros across his stat line.

Davis is probably the best of the portal players and he isnt good enough to start on even this team. Nuff said.

Bell - can be a solid complimentary player, but never will be the go to guy. He badly needs a high quality PG to get him open looks from his spots.

JJ - was playing really well...and now he is out. UGH !!!!!

The frosh - Choppa has played his way into the lineup and whether or not he starts is secondary to his getting starter minutes, which he just got. He needs to get those minutes in every game going forward. Love this kid's game !!! Freeman is OK right now, but definitely needs another year to be a star.

The rest - nobody even worth talking about in terms of what they bring to the table and equating that to Ws. Only a miracle jump by Chance this season to become the player we all hope he might become is even worth fantasizing about.

The HS recruiting under Red has improved big-time. The issue is clearly the portal, which is a function of NIL dollars. When we pay up and get Red some real talent, then we can talk about the quality of his work.

Basketball is a star's game. Even if our NIL dollars are limited, lets use them wisely and put 80% of those dollars into getting a proven high caliber PG. The only reason not to do this would be if the staff is high enough on Fennell to believe he can come in and be an effective starter at Day 1. If the staff is that high on Fennell then put those dollars into getting a proven star anywhere else.

Who is to blame for the roster then?

Leffew was the PG that we wanted and we would not pay up. He is doing quite well at Georgia.

Not paying to keep Brown was another faux pas.

Blame whomever is holding the purse strings.

I am not close enough to the program to say who else we may have unsuccessfully chased at other positions, but I do think a starting five of Brown, Leffew, Freeman, JJ, and Bell would have won us a couple of more games from where we are at right now.

Add in Choppa and Davis off the bench and maybe we could be playing at a competitive ACC level.

There was one play yesterday where his man jacked a 3 and Carlos was two steps late to the ball. He then turned, stood, and watched the shot as the same player ran past him toward the basket and rebounded his own brick and put it back up for an uncontested layup...

Carlos was as deer-in-the-headlights as it can get.

He threw his hands in the air briefly after the layup in frustration, but man oh man, it's painful to watch.

I think he knows he's not fast enough and in way over his head.

When he has the ball in possession and he's back-to-basket shielding the ball top of key and refuses to pass and Eddie has to come out and take the ball from him... equally painful to watch. He's terrified he'll turn the ball over doing basic dribbling at times.

I feel horrible for him as well. It's a rough watch.

This is true one of my sons is a sophomore in high school and he’s only ever known Syracuse as not being very good. As a dad it sucks because he could care less about Syracuse sports. He’ll end up being a casual and not a diehard.
