Clean House

There was one play yesterday where his man jacked a 3 and Carlos was two steps late to the ball. He then turned, stood, and watched the shot as the same player ran past him toward the basket and rebounded his own brick and put it back up for an uncontested layup...

Carlos was as deer-in-the-headlights as it can get.

He threw his hands in the air briefly after the layup in frustration, but man oh man, it's painful to watch.

I think he knows he's not fast enough and in way over his head.

When he has the ball in possession and he's back-to-basket shielding the ball top of key and refuses to pass and Eddie has to come out and take the ball from him... equally painful to watch. He's terrified he'll turn the ball over doing basic dribbling at times.

I feel horrible for him as well. It's a rough watch.
I'm where I was with Kaleb Joseph, I'm not mad at all at the guy, it's the coach.

If you're telling me Moore can't dribble the ball over the line then either Red doesn't know what he's watching or Moore sucks too.

Give Carlos 5 a game and give Moore 35 at the point and see if Carlos can go from there.

Bell doesn't rebound and can't guard his defender anyway and JJ didn't when he was at the two so throw him there and let Moore and Eddie figure it out the offense.

We're not good, but putting players out to fail when there are capable bodies around will make it worse before it's better.

I feel bad for Carlos, Red is embarrassing him at this point. I say that sincerely, I haven't said much about him because he does seem like one of the few actually trying out there, maybe Eddie, but Eddie can't move like at all. He moves worse than DaJuan Coleman ever did with some of the worst potato knees ever.
FWIW, Red's trust in Bell the last two years has hurt the program more than anything

I get it. He can shoot. Was worth the risk. End of the day, he simply isn't a basketball player

The combo of Bell and Starling as your two main guys was the sign of disaster. I said it from the jump, defense sunk them last season, it's sinking them now.

I really don't see what he sees in either of these guys and never have. I try to understand it just doesn't make sense at all.

Yeah - similar situation in some respects but difference is Carlos is a senior player.

I know the league disparity and all, but you read his bio/resume and it's still hard to add all of it up to be this ineffective this year:

It's not hard to add up, he's an extremely undersized point guard who isn't very fast or athletic who played in a very bad league and won awards based on opinion.

You don't go into the season with him as a starter, nobody's opinion I respect around here thought he was a starter. We chose an out of shape center who had 5 blocks last year over a point guard.

I agree about Carlos. Seems like a great kid who is in over his head. I watched an interview with him in the locker room last night and it felt mean that the guy was even asking him questions.

I guess I’m really confused. I keep reading posts saying our big problem is we need a point guard. Then I read posts saying put Moore or Cuffe, neither of whom have ever played point, at the point. Kinda contradictory, no?

Who would you like to play point guard and why?

I think the two ideas are totally aligned. They whiffed on Carlos. There is no backup point guard. So, let's try the other guys and see what happens.

If we are keeping a coach because a player we have lost. Thats such a loser mentality.

I guarantee Anthony will be less impactful than Ray Rice.

Wildhack has to realize that Red is an abject failure. This is beyond incompetent. Boeheim really fd up things anointing a totally unprepared man for the job
Young Anthony may not be impactful but the NIL he brings from his parents will be.

Yeah, I have quickly come to the conclusion that accolades and awards from the Coastal/Colonial league really mean jack squat at the P4 level.

I knew he was undersized but was hoping he had a decent level of speed and athleticism...Those hopes were clearly misplaced.

Over what point guard? Who did we have a shot at? Don’t say Leffew, he’s third on Georgia in assists, and less of a point than Mintz was. Not to say Carlos is the answer, but one thing that’s hard to understand is how a guy who shot 89% on free throws last year is at 50% this year. The ACC play better free throw defense?

so, then, we don’t really need a point guard is what you’re saying. Any old guard will do.

Did you check how many free throws he made a game?

Answer is 2

So he hit 90% over 5 games, he shot 9-10.

Carlos is averaging 3 3 and 3 and listed as a point guard, you really care about contradictions at this point? What would happen? Lost by 30 instead of 26,

Is this you on record sating Moore can't dribble and pass the ball? Because I did, he made more outlet passes to the wings last game than I've JJ do all year, but but Moore can't play PG. Laughable.

Who would you like to play point guard and why?
Sounds like he's a Carlos and Westry guy until JJ comes back, and yet all 3 are the wrong answer at PG and not one of them should have the jetpack on them over Carlos.

I think this whole thing about how great of a job Red did last year with a flawed team is overstated some. I mean, yeah, there is definitely truth in that but we also had a PG (which I was very critical of) who carried the team at times on his back. That was partly why I was so frustrated with Judah. He was so talented but could have been so much better for the team.

Would anyone really pick this year's team to beat last year's team? I would have prior to the start of the season, but clearly not now. Judah would have a field day with this year's team. It would be brutal.

After a while I started to realize that even if Judah passed to one of his teammates, which was hard because they were usually just standing still around the 3pt line, they were usually going to brick it anyways, and I started to understand why he was trying to do too much.

Yes, but he played hero ball at times when he absolutely did need to. He also played lazy D. He went for steals at times so he didn't have to actually play tough lock em down D. Judah could have been elite on D, in my opinion.

Other than Choppa offensively, nobody played particularly well. But for as much crap as Bell got in the game thread last night he happened to..

Lead the team in rebounds
Lead the team in steals
Lead the team in blocked shots
Was 2nd in scoring
Shot 50%

And for you advance metrics guys..

He had the best defensive rating
Was 1 of only 3 players with a positive BPM along with Moore and Davis

While I’m at it, let me also add that a small handful of you need to start thinking about what you post. Some seem to be trying to outdo each other on how far over the top you can go with ridiculous and sad posts about players and coaches. Yes, it’s a frustrating season so far, but as has been said several times over the years on this board “it’s not necessarily what you say but how you say it.

All the mods are getting tired of the number of posts that are getting deleted because things like “kick so and so off the team”, “I hope he leaves at the end of the year if not sooner”, “he’s trash”, “ he must have compromising pics of Red”, and one of the best last night, “so and so must be on the take”.

Cut it if you want to continue posting.

I watched the game Hofstra played against Duke when we signed him, he was like what we're seeing now, but I think Hofstra has a far more structured offense.

What I took from that was, and again it was one game, that Carlos was a 10 minute a guy game who would pop in with some energy and find some open guys and confuse the defense after seeing a different styled guard. I said this much then and I haven't come off it while 80% of the fanbase bought a crap sandwich being sold on nothing else.

Carlos was the 50th rated PG, that's the best we could've gotten? Take 500k out of what Eddie got, who could you get with that price tag? Easily a top 10 point guard. You can't win without good guard play and poor defense, we have the worst of both.

You can't watch Chris play and believe that he is a guy this team can depend on, like at all. He may have been the best defender yesterday, but what about the day before?

You've watched basketball far longer than me but I've watched a lot in my lifetime and I haven't seen anyone ever like him get the time, chances, starts, and long leash in my lifetime.

I've never said anyone is on the take and know that wasn't directed at me, but my issue is how he is used and the expectation for him and where he is at on those expectations.

It was an embarrassing game and in almost every game we've played the announcers have ragged on him as much as people here.
Chris Bell made it difficult for himself to be defended, we didn't create this out of thin air.
