Malcom Cater is asking for a second chance

I'd give him a 2nd chance. Doug did the right thing releasing him from the team for stealing frm teammates but he did his time and now because he was a "kid" shouldn't be punished for life. It probably wont be SU but I bet some school gives him another chance.

I think the kid deserves a second chance also. Somewhere in the gospel according to Doug I believe is the scripture that everyone deserves a second chance; especially those that have not had the benefits that many of us have had. Put him on a short leash and provide some mechanism for him to earn his way back... like doing volunteer work and let's see him grow as a person.

I'm conflicted on this. On one hand, everyone deserves a second chance...everyone. On the other hand, there is nothing suggesting that his second chance has to be at SU. I would be okay with HCDM doing what he can to see that Cater can get a chance at another school. Short of that, I would be very cautious about bring him back onto the team at SU. IT would have to be a virtual unanimous decision of players, coaches and administrators. And, of course, he would be on a strict probationary status.

100% unanimous decision where voters choices are kept annonymous. 1 vote no and it's a no go but I highly doubt the school would allow him back in regardless.

He's saying the right things and showing the proper demeanor to warrant a second chance. What I don't know is if he's put on the same act after prior transgressions in the past. I might be open to it, but would want the process of petitioning for re-instatement, interviews, etc. to play out during the fall semester, with the quickest possible resolution getting him on campus for the spring semester. That would allow time to see if he maintains behavior outside of the shock camp environment and also remove the possible friction with Nassib from the equation (did he steal from any non-senior teammates?).

Even if his bridges are burnt at SU, it's worth helping him find another school to:
a) Allow him to turn his life around and be a productive citizen;
b) In the event that he regresses, I'd rather see a headline saying something like Delaware State Linebacker Arrested, than an eternal reference to him as a former SU Player.

I agree...and then an entire team vote if Nassib says yes.
...or at least the players that were on campus when the crimes were committed.

It would generate huge positive publicity if the kid has his head on straight but could be a nightmare if it goes wrong. If the kid could rise above it and make the NFL its a Hallmark movie.

I'm so starved for a winning FB program that I don't care if we become Thug U... just win

On a semi-more serious note, I like the suggestion above -- ask Nassib privately, if he says yes, then let the team vote. I just don't see how we can't consider this...
I mean... we've had bball players have sex with other another player's girlfriend and still didn't kick them off the team. I'd rather my tv get stolen then that... . Yes I realize this broke the law... but he paid his time... my point is there's been other crap to ruin team chemistry before that I feel is worse, so they could make this work.

Until I read the 2nd article I would have said no too. He stole a TV, he stole it from a teammate, really freakin' stupid BUT he didn't hold a gun to someones head, he didn't drive drunk and put others in danger, and he didn't stomp someones face in.

He sounds like he really learned his lesson. Someone like this can be a big positive role model on the team. Imagine if Marrone gives him a 2nd chance and he shines on and off the football field. The team will pull together, they'll put a lot of faith in the coaching staff, and future recruits might like what this says about Marrone as a coach.

Depends. What kind of TV are we talking about here?

I'm okay with him coming back, as long as the players allow it to happen.

I think he should have to re-earn his scholly, though. Start out as a walk on and win the free ride back.

absolutely no team vote, this isn't a democracy. no second chance at su as he will be nothing but a team distraction, when they need total focus.if hcdm can get him in somewhere else fine, but we have moved on and he needs to as well, but somehwre else.

Since he stole from his teammates, maybe Marrone should let the team vote on it. However,Marrone should still have the final say. No single player is worth causing bad blood within the team ranks. If he is allowed back, it should be with the understanding of a zero tolerance policy being in effect.
"Zero tolerance should be the minimum requirement. Think before making a snow ball. Once its made and packed into a sphere its almost impossible not to throw. Having lived the area I know that temptation very well.18 wheelers weren't much of a challenge but they made for good targets. My absolute favorite was the damned snow plow which created effn more work for me after I finished our driveway. I would have preferred my Glock 9mm.When the miserable ass driver is laughing his head off he deserves to get one in his butt.:rolling:

Not that there's anything wrong with that

Marrone has already proven it's a democracy when he decides it is, i.e. Mike Williams being let back on the team after a suspension. If the players choose to bring him back, how's that going to be a distraction other than in the event he re-offends?

tough to say no and tough to say yes. he would likely help the team if he has gotten his life turned around. if the team can get past it i can. half the team doesn't even know who he is.

doing stupid things for money is something i can get over.

As I said, think Marrone should have the final say, but if I'm in his shoes, I'd want to take the team temperature on this... maybe a conversation behind closed doors with the Captains (including Nassib).

I was thinking along the same lines. At least, I would let Nassib have a say.

Yep, stole from a teammate. Needs to be 100% player vote to let him back. Make it an anonymous vote. You get one "No" vote, you can't let him back. We're not talking about Ray Lewis here.

do not place the players in a conflictual situation, which can cause severe divisiveness. ok captains say yes and nassib says no---just great creat trouble.keep the players out of the decision making process---its not theirs to make!!!this is all marrone.anyone that has leadership experience knows what type of decisions are left to the troops, and what ones are not, and this one is not

Thankfully. Otherwise it would be a definite no vote by me.

Williams was a player vote, majority wins.

Will not be at Syracuse. But I could see a program like Delaware or UMass taking him at the 1-AA level.

Someone hasn't been paying attention to realignment. UMass will be playing football in the MAC this coming season.

Do you really think that our team chemistry could be destroyed by pro and anti Malcolm Cater camps? If so, I think we have our answer as to whether Marrone would even consider this.
