Coach K said no to Amaker

A person who has had a long career leading an organization to huge levels of success is going to have deep connections and loyalty with people through out that organization.

And those people remaining in the organization are likely going to look to that leader for counsel and advice from time to time after he/she is gone because the departed person has a demonstrated ability to make the right decisions most of the time and have often already “been there - done that” when the person now in charge is dealing with something new or novel to them.

Amaker has been away from Duke for quite a while, and Scheyer is in tune with the program as it is today. Perhaps the analogy with us would be if Louis Orr was offered the gig, and JB interceded on Red's or GMac's behalf.
What I can't understand is, if Amaker really wanted the job and it was offered, why not accept anyway? "I appreciate the advice Coach, but this is my dream job opportunity, and I'm going to accept". Nothing K could do about it, no?
Scheyer knows where the bags are hidden. Amaker was before recruiting went wild.

I worked for Jack Welch for 20 years ... and for Immelt for less than two years before taking early retirement. That is all I will say.
Haha gotcha. I think that’s why people assume it was a Welch setup. He was an extremely bright guy. That would be like Coach K picking Tom Crean

There is probably more truth here than not. But interesting that he despised Quin for that

Sure would like to know who the "sources" are that Coach K to Scheyer over Amaker. Sounds not credible to me without known sources.

I think he’s quite happy at Harvard. Believe BC was interested in him when they hired Christian but interest wasn’t mutual
Makes me wonder if thinking he had the chance to get the Duke job, he turned down other offers to make sure he didn’t look bad. Easy to justify not winning ncaa games when you are coaching at Harvard.

I believe it, I wouldnt put it past K to do that. He will recruit a kid just to store him on his bench just to prevent a league foe from landing him. We've all seen it.
I wish we could do that.

He had to turn it down because accepting it meant he will have to take on an assistant coach position under K for one year. That can't work unless you have K's blessing because K could change his mind and stay two more years or who knows what could have happened. On top of that he would have to work with the current staff under K who's jobs may be in jeopardy once he takes over.
Don’t agree. Duke University offered Amaker the Head Coaching position. I’m sure the offer has a specific salary and start date not some nebulous “if and when K decides to retire.” Amaker let K manipulate him. He’s a grown-ass man and not some kid. He owns his career decisions.

If the article is to be believed, that "Krzyzewski explained to Amaker that if he left Harvard to join the Duke staff as a successor-in-waiting for the 2021-22 season, the move would force the demotion of a Blue Devils assistant and “create an awkward dynamic with Scheyer." Then the start date will be one year BEFORE K retires, as an assistant HCIW to work under K for one year to transition. That would be one year of misery if K doesn't want him. This is totally different from starting the day after K leaves.

Valid point. Sometimes you have to accept a less than ideal circumstance to get to where YOU want to go. If Amaker really wanted the job, and was confident in his ability, this is a “I’ll show you” moment. Instead, he chose to to cash in his chips and complain. Rather that be the head cold at Duke - which is a pretty sweet job.

Why would anyone do that? Take a demotion to get a promotion? He was an assistant already for 9 years ending in 1997. Entire story sounds strange - previously who ever quit a D1 coaching job to be an assistant to take over another head coaching job in a year? Seriously, has anyone done that before?

Matt Painter did it at Purdue although he was only head coach at Southern Illinois for a year, so not nearly as experienced as Amaker.

Thanks didn’t know that. Seems it would be awkward for the retiring head coach, the coach in waiting, the assistants and players.
