Only 1 guy can truly turn this around

To be fair to Marrone, it's been 3 years since he's been here. There aren't many of his guys left on the team. Then also add to the fact that Marrone hasn't been coaching those kids for the past 3 years. So it's hard to blame him since he barely coached the.m. But that is his fault since he bolted for the NFL. Can't blame him. He probably never thought he'd be an NFL head coach.
You're not giving Marrone enough credit. He is very calculating and I honestly believe his end game was always the nfl.

People are also forgetting he couldn't recruit nor liked it. He isn't a college coach. Did a nice job here but his in ability to not recruit out is in the situation we are now with our freshman out playing most of the upper class man. Shafer is a college coach. He gets the players to buy into his vision and is a far superior recruiter. Also people are forgetting dougs in game coaching wasn't all that great either. Lastly that guy built the bridge then burned it down on the way out. Not only did he burn it out but he pissed all over the smoldering pile of debris. No and hell no to Marrone! And yes I'm bitter and fully support our coach

Marrone's drive by tenure was marked by improvement, but his conference record sucked. He was a .500 coach in the BE. How about we give Shafer his fourth year before we make comparisons?

Are we going to be .500 in the ACC?

Four years too long to wait in today's college football, where new regimes -- with zero tradition -- regularly turn it around in half the time. I think we've seen enough (and think what it will be like with 3 wins heading into BC finale, with maybe 18,000 in the stands).

For me, being out game-planned by Willie Taggert after a bye week was enough. Last two weeks just like shampoo: lather, rinse, repeat. With the inane coach speak at the end. Giving up 19-play drives at end of game back to back doesn't seem too hard nosed to me. But I'm just a hater I guess.

Have to believe that Coyle has seen enough too. I think he has a plan, and it doesn't involve this staff.

Both notions of bring back Marrone and cutting Shafer loose are deeply flawed. Marrone has walked away from 2 coaching jobs and his level of commitment has to certainly be questioned. Plus, you don't go backwards with the program. If Marrone was the man for the program he would still be here. Clearly he is not.
As for Shafer, surely he doesn't have the same type of shine and produce the type of media bytes that some people would like to see from our HC but you certainly can't question his commitment to the program and his drive to succeed. We all knew that there would be some level of OTJ training for Shafer with respect to being a head coach and we've seen enough positive aspects emerge from the program that people who are being objective cannot deny that he has the program moving in the right direction.

Some of the things that people are frustrated with concerning Shafer can be fixed/ changed. As Shafer continues to develop as a coach the in game decision making should improve. Sure it's frustrating to lose these close games but we played LSU (one of the primer programs in the Nation) in a really tough and competitive manner and yesterday we played the #25 team right down to the wire.

My bet is that next year we win games like that. Shafer may be rough around the edges and do some things which are ostensibly incomprehensible during the games but the guy unquestionably deserves another year from everyone before there is any serious discussion about replacing him.

We all want to win and we all want to win NOW. But program building takes patience and it would be a shame to to abandon the Shafer era on account of having be frustrated for so long with coaching staffs which have failed to turn the program around.

Doug decided he didn't want to be our coach any more. What changes HIS mind?

I saw nothing Saturday that suggested that what we need to do is pull the program up by the roots and plant something else.

In the late 70's and early 80's it was all about getting the offense and defense good at the same time. We went back and forth with it until we finally made it in 1987. We went 11-0 and had 15 straight winning seasons. Now we are trying to do the same thing. The pieces are there on offense and they are mostly freshmen and sophomores. Before they graduate, Shafer and Bullough will have the defense back up to 2010/2014 levels and then we will have our breakthrough year.

Like what?

"He did a lot more than just make the program competitive" - like what?

I couldn't agree more. He took a team with marginal talent and got them back to bowl games. He took a lightly recruited 2 star qb and made him an NFL draft pick. This without an Ensley or a remodeled locker room. I really like shafer, I want him to keep his job. But a coach like marrone, who btw did a pretty decent job in buffalo, is an outstanding top tier coach IMO that would take this talent and win these nail biting games that were finding a way to lose
Saying we had "marginal" talent is being kind. I always felt HCDM stole a game or two every year that we shouldn't have won. Still waiting on that out of this staff. Not saying it can't be done but haven't seen it so far.

Honest question. Would you rather steal wins with less talent than have the talent to win every game?

The first scenario does not last but we are building toward the second..which does.

He also threw away a game his 4th year here, the Northwestern game should have ended like yesterdays, with us kicking a Field Goal to win at the end. Instead with a 3rd and 1 on their 20 yard line with 2:44 on the clock, we throw a pass into the end zone for a TD, and end up losing.

Much different situations. This program is in an much, much, much better state than it was in 2008.

He did a lot more then "just make this program competitive".
Not really. And I give him a lot of creit for what he did. But 25-25 in the big east is just what it is. Plus, he couldn't recruit a lick

My god this place is amazing. Now, a coach who has gotten 2 NFL head jobs (even though one was pulled under very shady circumstances) and had multiple offers from CFB programs while he was here isn't good enough to coach SU. SMH..

He didn't get offered the Jets job. That is simply not true. There was nothing shady about it. the owner didn't like him.

Shh, don't ruin the narrative.

Various league sources also indicated that the AD at Bama and Robert Kraft both reached out to Marrone, to offer their HC jobs.

DM should not even be allowed to step foot in the dome . wouldn't even let that doosh clean the pee troughs

Grrrrr! Leave my pee troughs outta this! ;)

Orangefoo's profound thoughts for the day:

hcdm left the bills and the bills are a worse team without him
hcdm left the orange and the orange are worse team without him

The majority of the fan bases at both of hcdms last two jobs are happy he's gone

Please discuss.

If SU ever hired Maronne or Edsall, my season ticket days are over. They both sold their Alma Mater down the river. Maronne is a lousy recruiter and he was .500 coach in the Big East. I would keep Shafer over both of these guys and it's not even close.

There's a difference between saying he wasn't as amazing as everyone seems to like thinking he was, and saying he's "not good enough to coach here." It's a pretty big difference, actually. Marrone was 19-24 before his team got red hot over the final seven weeks (one loss to Cincy notwithstanding) in 2012. I appreciate him getting us out of the hole Robinson created, but it's revisionist history to act like he was a savior in his time here.
