So UF will be in the market

Babers offensive scheme is intriguing. Florida been having trouble on offense since Meyer left but I imagine they go after Kelly or someone who is more proven at the P5 level.
I’m friends with an Oregon BOT, he said Kelly wouldn’t play the game with the donors at OU, so despite his success, they didn’t love him there. Wonder if his reluctance to do that will hurt him at the big southern schools where that is demanded. That said, guy had a great system, and will be solid with Florida athletes.

Babers wouldn't be the guy for either school, imo. Not even really close yet.

Think about it, A&M at 5-3, livid over those results, is going to want a replacement from Syracuse with a worse record? No way.

Florida, same type of deal. 2/3 years they have an SEC East title, the first year that coach stumbles, they're going to replace him with a guy who currently has a losing record as a P5-HC?

I just don't see it. Definitely not from those schools. Big boosters would go nuts.

This is all a good thing, because it makes us very lucky.

Makes sense - SEC schools want big names - so Chip Kelly would seem to fit better than Dino.

Matt Campbell is also in the similar position as Baber’s probably better. Campbell is coaching at big state U in a P5 conference, reasonable shot at the playoff and they’ll give him the keys to the city there. He’d be crazy to leave.

Really? ISU is a state school but it plays second banana to Iowa, doesn't have much of a history, has a tiny fan base, and is in the most unstable P5 conference. SU football shares some of those issues (fan base) but is a step up otherwise.

I think the only thing that keeps Campbell there is the buyout. Hope ours is as big.

I believe ours is around 12m

So what if they’re 2nd banana to Iowa? Regarding fans they avverage over 50k last year and had 56K against TCU, sell out is 61-5. This isn’t bad for a program who’s still probably trying to win fans back.

Could he do better sure but that’s not really the point. him even accepting that job was out of left field so why did he go there to begin with?, he could’ve done better before even accepting that job.

Couple reactions:
  • We're 0-1 in the state of Florida this year and if we lose to FSU, no way Babers is on that list next week.
  • I would love a list of P5 schools outside the ACC who are 1) in warm weather, 2) play on turf and 3) ideally private.
  • Not many of the 65 teams meet all three. The teams I am completely guessing would be of the most interest to Babers would be a power school in Texas or UCLA, Cal, USC.
As far as the impatience of the big time factory schools: it comes with the territory, just like it does in the NFL (sans the Bungles.) If you grew up playing and coaching football in Hawaii, Syracuse would never ever be a dream school. And while there are some rational strengths: the Dome, there are many issues: limited recruiting base in the immediate area, lukewarm/bandwagon football support and resources.

Some of the latter can be dealt with, namely resources. But let's not fool ourselves to think the impatience of other administrations is the reason he won't jet. But if it's me, here's what I would sell to him on a contract extension:
  • Money. Fitz at Northwestern makes $3.3m. That's the base and not much more. Performance incentives for # of wins each year, beating P5 teams on the road, top 4 finish in ACC, ACC Championships, Final 4 and National Championship wins.
  • Money for assistants. Ward has to be getting looks after this year.
  • Sign a deal with Amazon to feature Syracuse a la Michigan. Little known: this year could have been Syracuse, but the administration "wasn't ready." Can't blame them.
  • Support for a Babers football camp for HS coaches nationally to learn his philosophy. Think of it similarly to SU's broadcast Summer camp. Make him a national brand.
  • Have a high buyout clause for any move before 2020. Because anywhere he would be a place that would irrationally pay it. And by then, hopefully Syracuse looks like a destination program or one of the assistants could totally take over.
  • Play up - appropriately, and I only mean this respectfully - "Syracuse is home to the first African-American Heisman winner; let's be the place where it's also home to the first national championship with an African-American head coach."

Think we need a separate board for coaching rumors. Already tired of the Babers panic.
I sent off a message to board Moderator for this subject which seems to penetrate many threads...nothing in return.

I think they should hire -

Matt Campbell is going to be the Tom Herman of this coaching cycle.

Also Florida is pathetic if they fire McElwain after 3 years. Winning 2 division titles and getting no benefit of the doubt is crazy.

Babers would be stupid if he took that job.

I agree, the florida and Tennessee jobs arent what they were 15-20 yrs ago. Especially if UF is gonna be trigger happy with coaches every 2-3 years. The bloom left mcelwain crazy quickly after he was red hot 3 years ago.

The guy gets to the SEC Finals in first two years and now is on chopping block.

Big money but no patience and little long term support from fan base and Admin

This is one thing in our favor, IMO. Dino is at the right age, where he builds this up, and can ride this as his last job before retirement. He appreciates the school's legacy, and he recognizes the Dome as a unique advantage for his style of play. We are also going to be far more patient with him than any of the traditional elite powers will be.

He only takes a lesser buyout if his lawyer tells him he won’t get all the buyout he would get.

Florida is bluffing right now seeing if McElwain will cave. It will depend on his lawyer if he takes less than he should.

Plus right now I would say that the ACC is just as good or better than the SEC.
